How is Ann Arbor more expensive than Dallas? That really surprises me, isn't dallas cost of living pretty high right now?
I would bet at worse those numbers come from Ann Arbor proper, and you can live considerably cheaper outside of town. Its only 120k people or so, so getting outside of the city should be pretty easy and I bet very cheap.
I wouldn't want to live that far North long term. But if its a good career move outside of just the initial pay increase I'd absolutely do it, but I like traveling and moving.
But as said that 22% raise isn't that significant after taxes and the cost of moving.

Be sure to compare state taxes, both income and property. And, if in Ann Arbor city limits, those too. Buddy of mine who moved up there screwed himself by not doing so.
Despite hefty taxes, he b*tches about many other individual services, such as garbage pickup, being pricey up there, too. All adds up, especially when you are doing your taxes in April and still looking out your window at snow.

Ann Arbor is a lot like a colder Austin. Big arse university there has many advantages for everything from culture and food to infrastructure.
But I lived Dallas and would not leave Dallas for Ann Arbor for 22% more money.

Moving to a cold state with no mountains 
If you move North it should be Montana, Wyoming, Idaho or Utah no Michigan. If it's cold half the year there better be outdoor sports and low taxes/COL that comes with the weather.

I lived for 10 years in Michigan. 6 of those about 40 minutes outside of Ann Arbor. Its a fine town. Nothing crazy but i love michigan. I miss the snow. I miss multiple seasons.
Our May-August used to be Water skiing, tubing, boating and any and all summer activities. Our winter activities were skiing, sledding, hockey, ice fishing, snow snowmobiling, and just having a blast in the snow. Then Spring and Fall was always so nice as well.
While i love living where i live now in GA i would trade the weather between the two states in a heartbeat.

the winters definitely suck, but i definitely think you get more days of "good weather" each year in AA than DFW. if you compare AA's weather to parts of the south that aren't DFW, it's probably a much different discussion.

Do NOT move to Michigan from Dallas. I used to live there and it has nothing to do with the cold weather. People up there are assholes that have zero clue about having fun.
