MI auto insurance consistently ranks as one of the most expensive, comparable to Louisiana. Many everyday things are more expensive plus MI has an income tax. It has some very beautiful areas, plenty of outdoor activities just not a whole lot of calendar time for it.

Even though she's a slut (at least what an Ohio guy told me), I really like Ann Arbor.
Last time in town ran in to a former LSU football player (1950s era). Boy, cant remember his name right now but ran in to him in New Orleans prior to Championship game as well. Son is doctor in Ann Arbor.

Correct, but some of the suburbs are fairly expensive, too. As has been said, the biggest factor in cost is cost of housing in AA itself.
It's a terrific place. Go in with good expectations, and you will probably like it a lot. I've said in another thread, a lot of college students do everything they can to get away from their college town when they graduate and get a life. One of the reasons AA is expensive is because people who graduate from UMich do everything they possibly can to stay there. And there are good reasons.
There's plenty of great food there, although restaurants come and go frequently. It's a pleasant enough place as a city on its own, and close to real recreation areas.
I miss living there, and if I could afford it, I'd move back in a heartbeat after I retire.
