That's the spirit of the OP when I asked the question-a Larry David -ism. The kind of social stuff that we all encounter that is in the grey area. The $50 gift certificate for the $150 meal. The one-way airplane ticket gift. The gift that obligates the recipient to spend more money. Simple concept. Not life and death stuff. And then people twist it to be some statement of ingratitude when nothing could be further from the truth. I like them personally, they have been generous when I see them annually, I've put a LOT of money in their pockets, everybody gets along, etc. It's just funny and something I haven't seen discussed. And one dude stroked out about it already.
OT gonna OT. Errybody so mad.

Dude you've typed at least 3 long arse posts in this thread to say how not upset and how grateful you are.
That's a lot of work to prove something

I've got one question for the OP -
Would/do you go to Ruth's Chris for dinner without gift cards?

I'm one of those weird people that never orders dessert. I just don't have a huge sweet tooth.

Very very rarely.
And if it's my wife and I out to dinner, we don't always get an appetizer at all, pretty much never get two.

They're not even on the same planet.

You know it's possible to spend less than $50 there, right?
2 can probably eat lunch there (no dessert or booze) and after tax and tip it would come out to maybe $60.
Stop being a cheap, pretentious, ungrateful dickwad and enjoy the gift or re-gift it to someone who would.

Yeah because a one way ticket would likely be half or more of the cost.

Probably $170ish plus tip. That's on the high end.

Sounds like bar and appetizer alone. Walk out buzzed and fed for $20 out of your pocket. Maybe $30?
I’m a barfly with zero shame in sitting at a bar alone though.

Do you plan on going to Ruth's Chris, gift card or not? That's the difference.
If I give someone in Oregon a $200 gift card to Christiano's in Houma, that's useless.
If I give you a $50 gift card to a restaurant that you frequent, it's very helpful.

Agree...
Certainly it's a good gift if you like the place and can afford to eat there. In that case it really is a free $50.
