I've eaten at Ruth's Chris for under 50 bucks quite a few times (not including tip). It's not as expensive as people make it out to be unless you try to make it expensive.

I've been for my bachelor party and with customers where the party was 10+ people and the bill was around 1200 to 1400 bucks. And this was with A LOT of alcohol. Yeah, it's over 100 per person, but that's buying bottles of wine and top shelf liquor. For a single person, you can get a steak and sides with tea for like $40ish.

I imagine the OP will take his wife out and they will each just order a salad, sweet potatoes and broccoli with water so he can get out of there under 50 bucks.

I'm looking forward to the update already.

But giving you a Disney gift card and a Ruth's Christ gift card are two entirely different animals. The OP isn't debating whether or not a GC is a quality gift. He's asking whether a GC in this amount is reasonable or if it should have been a larger amount, considering the restaurant.

I think it's pretty similar, like nurse said if you're planning to go then great, but if you're not? The main point it isn't gonna cover the whole thing, so there's strings attached. They're small inconsequential strings, but it's Monday and I'm bored. It's to a place that the giver doesn't really know or care if the OP enjoys, but is generally assumed to be classy. The giver is likely doing this to present a certain image, but in doing so is only offering to pay for a taste.

I'm not saying OP should send the giver a hand written note with "frick you" in delicate calligraphy, I just think this should be avoided if you want the person to think you actually give a shite. It's a different discussion entirely if the OP and the giver had a previous talk about how much they both enjoy RC, or had been there together etc.

So many people in this thread conflating $50 cash with a frikkin $50 Ruths chris gift card.

These two things are not even close to the same value to most people in the world.

Dinner with wine, apps, dessert and steaks for Pimp and his wife at RC is easily $300.

The large majority of the population will never do this, or if so extremely rarely.

Virtually no one goes there just for wine or dessert.
A 50$ RC card is therefore, completely worthless to most people. The gift giver knows this.

Given this knowledge, the point of the gift CANT be to actually give someone something nice or express affection or respect for him.

The point of the gift CAN ONLY BE to signal social status and deliver a message of "I am superior to most people, so these $50 cards mean nothing to me." Its the only reasonable interpretation.

It is also possible that the giver is signaling to pimp "I am superior to most people, and Im sure you are too." but that seems less likely to me since he doesnt know this person well.

There is nothing wrong with being superior or accomplished or wealthy. Quite the opposite.

The evil comes when you start broadcasting it. Overt signaling is a plague right now in our culture, rocket-fueled and amped to the max by social media. Learn to spot it better.

Really? Do you not drink?

The wife usually gets a cocktail, I usually get two. I havent bought a bottle of wine in forever, especially if I am eating steak, in which case I get a good scotch.

The last nice place my wife and I went to was La Petit Grocery (not a steak house) on Magazine, and even after 2 rounds of drinks, appetizers & entrees for both, tip and tax it was like $140.

The only way to go way north of $150 is to get 3 or 4 rounds of drinks and dessert.

Servers usually make below minimum wage... gratuity is the only way they get by. Stop being an a-hole. If you can afford to go out to eat, you can afford to tip.

Quit lying. I said the following in the OP which you can choose to ignore as you please because who gives a shite:

quote:

I am grateful

With the premise that ANY GIFT IS GENEROUS and all gifts should be met with GRATITUDE

All gifts are generous. All gifts are appreciated.

But still, it does provide a Larry David-type dilemma for the gift recipient. Because it's not a free meal. It's a down-payment on a meal.

Furthermore, it saddles the recipient with the responsibility not to waste it. Which is the responsibility to spend more money. So in essence, it's an invitation for me to either have Larry David-type anxiety about wasting it (lol) OR using it and spending $150 bucks. So yeah, a $50 dollar Chili's certificate would in fact, have been a better gift. Because it would have been COMPLETE.

I did not include much detail about the gift giver because I did not want to make it about them or myself but I am one of their best clients for the last decade. I see them socially once a year and at that time they pick up a meal and drinks. This was meant to just be a general thread about the principal of giving someone a gift that obligates them to spend more money. In a related note I have another $125 gift certificate to Flemings from Christmas from a close friend who gives me a gift certificate every year. So I'd use that before the Chris one anyhow.

Anyhow, Imma just send it to Rondo as I'm a vegetarian now anyway since our mutual friend NovaBill and a Buddhist monk and my Yorkie motivated me to change my ways. It's all your's Rondo.

When I lived in New Orleans, I feel like between $150-200 was fairly common for dinner at a nice restaurant for my wife and I. We do drink wine typically, though.

If you don't want it, I'll take it.

If you don't drink, you can easily avoid going over $50 for your meal. That means you're basically getting a half priced steak dinner for two. Don't be such an ungrateful douche. I'd love to be able to afford steak, period let alone steak from the best joint in town.

Dude you continue to complain about it so you can say you're grateful all you want but everything else says otherwise.

Sorry a free $50 was so inconvenient for you.

Id be too embarrassed to use a $50 GC at Ruths......that just screams..."I'm poor and the only way I would ever eat at this restaurant is if someone gave me a GC"

If it's giving you anxiety you should just re-gift it.

ETA: And then take the wife out to Chili's instead.
