I think this particular sharing of new contacts is only available now after the latest update has been loaded. Our family doesn't do Apple, so I'm not as versed in iPhones.

If you don't use Apple then your phones have had the feature for years.

This is nothing but fear-mongering by people that have no clue how it works.

This is also Germans, we did it yesterday.

Please make sure you tell USA Today and other mainstream media about your theory regarding fear mongering. And certainly feel free to ignore it. Still a free country!

It is fear-mongering by and for people who aren't tech savvy. We already discussed it yesterday.

Deadline tomorrow !!! Everything you’ve ever posted becomes public from tomorrow. Even messages that have been deleted or the photos not allowed. Get. A. Grip.

From Bangor PD:

Okay, some panic surrounding your recently updated iPhone is slightly overstated.
I'm only telling you because I recently had some panicky emails inquiring about the dangers of the update, especially in reference to IOS 17's NameDrop.
People were a bit upset that we were not sharing. But, like I said, much that is shared is also wrong—like my Mama always said, "You're going to look dumb again, Timmy!!"
I'm a Luddite. I am not Kim Komando. Be sure to double-check all claims you get from your friends on Facebook. Also, investigate thoroughly anything Uncle Zeb yells to you over his shoulder from the recliner; he still uses a bag phone that he recently connected to Milwaukee M-18 batteries from the 3/8 & 1/2 inch Combo Drill Set picked up when he was the last man standing in the 2022 Family Christmas Yankee Swap.
NameDrop doesn't automatically share all your information with other iPhone users. Nope. I know you read about it this weekend on the page of a trusted Facebook source. Some folks panicked.
NameDrop offers you the opportunity to share information with other iPhone users. Still, you first have to essentially hold your respective iPhones together, head-to-head, and make them kiss like the indiginous northern Alaskans did (corrected from Mrs. Hutchings' original terminology). Remember those 7th grade Geography classes?
Oh, you also have to approve the share by hitting a button on your phone. You'll be prompted to do so before any share occurs.
You should also know, regarding the alternate kiss (rubbing noses), that they were trying to get us not to get so close to each other at the spring dance, but I digress.
Before I over-explain and get personally attacked by those iPhone nerds who love to grab your phone and reconfigure it to be better than the engineers who built it, I will tell you to reconsider freaking out. The Interweb is famous for creating panic, and iPhone NameDrop is an excellent feature that allows you to get contact information IF you want it.
IF.
So instead of standing around in three-degree weather trying to type the phone number of a good electrician into your contacts, you can agree to gather it from the other user, bump your phones together like Northern Alaskans who are in love, and then press a button to get their number.
Oversimplified? Yes. But your phone is NOT downloading your contact list into every iPhone you walk by at the mall.
And here you are worrying about it while the AirTag on your kid uses every single phone or iPad they come into contact with for you to know where he/she is.
Shut it off if you want, but read about it a little more after reading any post about it on The Facebooks; even this one.
I'll leave an official tutorial in the comments.
See your Uncle Zeb if you want to permanently turn off the feature—he has a hammer.
Keep your hands to yourself, leave other people's phones alone, and be kind to one another.

If you're not aware of what your kid is doing, if your kid is not with you 24/7 (guess yours is ), if the feature is not turned off on his/her (its in your case most likely)phone, then they can do whatever they please and you'd have no clue.

I didn’t realize there was an app setting that changed their ability to do as they pleased.

All these people spend all that time trying to equip their kids to make the right decisions are wasting their time?

Did you miss the part where a user needs to get involved? It’s no higher risk than the kid choosing to vocalize their phone and address. I’m fact, I’d say it’s lower risk as no chance to overhear.

I give 0 f's about text bubbles. I just wish the iPhone would accept a full size photo when I text it.
