In the cases of musicians and other artists, I think there is a link between the creativity one exhibits and depression. I don't have any data to support this but it seems like ultra-creative people tend have higher rates of depression.

I think I know why: creative people tend to be more intelligent than non-creative people. I firmly believe that stupid people are on average much happier than smart people are. Smart people obviously think a lot and eventually realize what a fricked up little world we live in. Stupid people don't really go outside of their comfort zone, and as they say "ignorance is bliss".

Then you understand nothing about Major Depression. It's biochemical and the person is unable to actually get or make themselves less depressed. Ots like asking a paraplegic to walk. They want to, but their body doesn't respond. Meds help a great deal, but not in all cases.

Wait....you think lack of money is what causes depression?

I might sound crazy but I wouldn't trade my life for theirs. I'm by no means professional athlete rich, but I make good enough money to afford what I want and be a season ticket holder

Nothing to strive for. I know for a fact that i would make a terrible rich person. It's not surprising to me to see so much drug use.

Because they might still have mental issues, depression, and all kinds of other shite they have to deal with that's out of their control. You have no fricking clue what's going on in these people's heads.

One of be biggest lies this society pushes is that you'll find happiness by having money. And that the more money you have the happier you'll be.
How would you know?

Again, you're thinking happiness lies within material objects and that's simply not true happiness, although having money can help ease some of the burden.

Actually, I'm really not. It isn't about buying things. I think a massive amount of happiness can be gained by having a fuller life. You will spend a fifth of your life working, and a good other chunk just planning your life around the fact that you have to work. Imagine if you had the money to not have to do that - to spend the rest of your life pursuing things you actually love, going places, seeing the world and having more experiences than a normal, working person is permitted. How is that not more happiness than the standard life we live?

If you're a millionaire, you can just go out and buy stuff or take a vacation whenever you want. Or go date someone better looking than you. Or you can go for a ride in your luxury car. I just don't get how rich people get depressed. Try living in a normal persons shoes where you barely get by.

Money doesn't fix brain chemistry. Not all depression is situational. If you're talking about Chris Cornell, he dealt with depression most of his life. He dropped out of high school because of severe depression.

The reasons people become brilliant at a certain skill is probably the same reason they have mental disease.

You know how they say ignorance is bliss? I think there is a good amount of people are too dumb to ever be unhappy. I'm jealous of them.

The major thing lots of money does is remove the stress of debts and monthly bills. Past that, all money does is buy stuff that CAN temporarily act as a solid distraction for a day or two at most.

Better to have less stress. But more money doesn't affect ones ability to be happy. It makes some things worse for some rich people as it removes them a bit from a reality most of us live in.

So if you're responsible and can budget your expenses, you are truly no better off.

*edit* vacationing and seeing the world does count for the rich and happiness a bit tho. Differences of worldly perspective is solid.

I actually think if I got $100 million right now that I would end up being less happy than I currently am.

Then you have a poor understanding of what depression is and why it occurs.

Here's one mental exercise; how would you feel if you were rich, and your friends only hung around you because you have money? How exactly does buying another car or flying to an island fix that?

Have you every known anyone with cancer? It's a disease, right? Same shite with depression. Clinical depression isn't some nonsense "o I've had a bad day" that the average Joe feels. It's the result of a chemical imbalance in the brain, among other things. How about you empathize with someone who, from an outsider's perspective, seems to have everything anyone could want, but nevertheless cannot shake the demon inside himself that makes him think of himself as worthless?

Imagine going through life knowing intellectually you've done all these great things, but none of them matter to you. All you are is a piece of shite weight on the world. All the time. No matter how hard you try to be something better.

For all of the ones we hear about, there many others that aren't basket casses that live a normal life and enjoy their wealth.
