While there is no doubt clinical (physical/medical) depression exists, one of the things I think is way overblown is the "tortured artist was fighting demons" garbage. Sometimes people are just frickups. Everytime some actor or musician dies an early death you can bet you'll read "Such and such was battling inner demons and turned to drugs and alcohol..." No, they used drugs and alcohol because they thought it was cool and fun. Poor decisions, irresponsible behavior and laziness aren't "demons". Chris Farley, Jim Morrison or John Belushi ate, drank and abused their way to an early grave. We like to trot out the "tortured, creative genius" trope out when they pass to make those performers seem more profound thus more worthy of our adoration. When, in reality, they're just guys who pretend to be someone else on camera or sing and play guitar on stage who drink or take drugs and get physically addicted.
I have no doubt some celebrities are fighting clinical depression, just like doctors, firefighters and oil rig workers do. But, not every celebrity death is due to some deep, profound inner or spiritual torment that drives them to genius and despair.

Money cant buy you love.

Money cant make you mature emotionally.

Desires are limitless.

Having the most toys is not actually as satifying as loving intimacy.

Parents are still who they were.

Nothing changes but bank account.

Friends. Relatives. Women.

Health too. Addictions are easier to pay for

Look at it like modern day diets. We can eat, basically whatever we want whenever we want.

Does that make us enjoy eating more? Quite the opposite, we spend the majority of our time trying to curb our diets because our over abundance has lead to unhappy results.

Burn out. You reach the pinnacle of your career at an early stage of life, as you get older you get disillusioned with that kind of life, some cant adjust.

Creative types are much more prone to bipolar disorder LINK

quote:

Some possible explanations For Andreasen, a creative person may be different from other people in that he is more open to experience, exploratory, risk tasking, and tolerant of ambiguity. Such traits make him see and feel and understand more, but they also make him hurt more easily and so more prone to experience suffering and dark moods. A creative person experiences the order and structure that others find comforting as inhibiting and even suffocating. For this reason, he feels the need to confront norms and conventions, discard the certitudes of black and white definition, and escape into a richer and more nuanced ‘borderless grey’. The freedom that he finds in this limbo enables him to enter into periods of intense concentration and focus akin to a trance or hypomanic episode. Such periods are characterized by heightened consciousness, frenzied activity, and intense productivity and are the hallmark of the creative process.

Hedonic treadmill

It is all about expectations, intentions, and BALANCE. A tremendously important lesson for all.

Example:

Random, ordinary person wins Mega-Lotto jackpot. Story often culminates with loaded random ordinary person depressed, broke, miserable or dead. If you delve into the psychology of those situations, oftentimes you will find the following:

-folks aspiring to improve themselves by ascending up the material /monetary "ladder" can sometimes find themselves in an existential crisis when they "acquire" the things they thought would make them "happy"'. Then, a pretty dark /bleak outlook descends on that person as it becomes clear that "happiness" for them is not "acquirable"
