Obviously, this is very personalized and not a one size fits all situation. We have the most recent Purple mattress (don’t ask me which one, the wife swore by it before we got it). It’s been the best mattress I have ever had.
I’m a Marine veteran who has dealt with different joint pains (particularly my back) for a long time and no amount of physical therapy, easy exercise, etc could actually relieve the pain. My wife wanted to try this for me given it was a different design that had some reviews similar to my situation that the owners had pain resolved. Anyways, I’m always a skeptic and my wife believed in their return policy, so I said whatever.
The first morning after the first night, I was SORE. Veterans know that feeling though, as the first night or so of sleeping on a new thing is usually not the greatest feeling the next morning.
Anyways, a year into owning it, after that first night? I have had minimal back pain, feel refreshed in the AM. The mattress sleeps super cool if you like that, and I don’t think I can recommend it enough. It’s a “sleep on top of” mattress rather than “sink in,” but what it’s done for my QOL has been amazing.

Wow, so many brands and opinions, LOL. I've had a Sleep Number for 20 years now but have added a memory foam and mattress topper in the past couple of years.

It depends on your weight and body type. For me, I like firm mattresses. I have a Big Fig, and it's very firm. I also have a Saatva Latex Hybrid, and it feels just right for me.
I like memory foam, but I sleep too hot. I've laid on the Purple, Purple 2, 3 and 4. As someone basically said earlier, they're firm where you need it and soft where you need it. For me, the Purple 3 would be great.
If you're ever in Houston, there is a place where you can try a lot of the bed in a box mattresses. I'm not going to pay 4,000+ for memory foam. Latex holds up longer!
For lower back pain, I like a firm memory foam that allows me to sink in just a little bit for supportive body contouring. It's just hot to me though. Everyone is different.
Latex doesn't contour like memory foam, but I like it the most. It just works for me. My wife can sleep in concrete, so it's all good for her.

When we moved last year we bought a tempurpedic, in part from recommendations here. Not cheap, cost me $3600, but I sleep well on it.

Absolutely, as well as what type of sleeper you are (side, back, belly). While I may be heavier than I was 5.5 years ago, there is no doubt that the hardest choice is for the sleeper that sleeps with whatever feels right that night.
I love my Purple for the support I have, but other people love to sleep on a cloud based on how they sleep. So personalized that it’s not something to make a purchase on until you know what you like.
Also it’s pretty funny how much better your attitude gets with a higher class mattress matched with a higher class pillow. Almost like sleep matters… or something

The thing with mattress makers is they're constantly changing the names of their product...and actually give different names to the "same" mattress sold at different stores. Makes it difficult to comparison shop. But I did a lot of research, and finally settled on "Carried Away" by Stearns & Foster. I found the same S&F mattress at Dillards (I believe its name was "Lucas Park")...and the prices were comparable (Memorial Day Sale). I went with Macy's because of their 90 day refund policy on mattresses...just in case I decided I didn't like it.
Yes, it's now 10 years old, but not the slightest hint yet of losing its firmness. It is a fantastic mattress. When it's time to buy another, I seriously doubt I'll look any further than Stearns & Foster, though I doubt I'll find this particular mattress. For some great information and advice, check out themattressexpert.com. This guy knows mattresses...and was a tremendous resource when I was in the market. Good luck. Your back will thank you.

Caspar from Costco - $799
Bought it for a condo (subtle brag) and it is so comfortable that when they are back in stock at Costco I will buy one for my primary bed.

Decided over a year ago to try the Wink Hybrid Bed (memory foam) with a "soft" firmness. My wife and I are both side sleepers and we love it.
No issues with pressure points or back stiffness. Had been sleeping on a Serta mattress with box spring for years and started to have issues staying asleep. When I go to sleep now on the Wink mattress, I rarely wake up until the sunlight peers through the window. What's more, I actually wake up feeling like I have rested.
US product made in Wisconsin, which is nice. The warranty is pretty good also.

Don't get a "Pillow top". I have one, and hate it. They say it fits your body. What happens is a groove forms where you lay. I have to climb up the side of my queen size bed when I get out of it. It's almost like laying in a ditch.

I used to have a "Tuft & Needle" and loved it... got a "Casper" recently and I'm not really a fan TBH.
Sill within the 100 night sleep thing... speaking of, in all seriousness, has anyone returned a air compressed mattress? Is it on me to get the damn thing back in a box to return it?
They probably give you that "guarantee" because no one has an industrial vacuum sealer and how the frick are you gonna get it back to the company?!
Real talk... if anyone knows, I'm interested.

Good to know! Mattresses are hard as heck to get right.

Had low back pain for about 15 years and had Serta then memory foam. Went away after I started sleeping on my side with my knees bent (semi fetal position). Don’t sleep on your back and see if that helps.

Sleep Number for 20 years. Love it. Best mattress I’ve ever slept on.
