The USGS responded to one twitter user who asked, “Is it safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents? Assuming you had a long enough stick, that is? Or would the resulting marshmallows be poisonous?”

quote:

Not only would it be unsafe, the USGS said, but the marshmallows would simply taste bad. The vent could be releasing sulfur dioxide or hydrogen sulfide — which both emit not-so-pleasant smells — and the sulfuric acid from vog, or volcanic smog, could create a “pretty spectacular reaction,” the USGS said.

If it's venting hydrogen sulfide they'll have much bigger problems than the marshmallows tasting funky.

Some dumbasses actually had to do this for them to issue a warning.

Is it safe to roast marshmallows over volcanic vents? Assuming you had a long enough stick, that is? Or would the resulting marshmallows be poisonous?”, asked the most bored person on earth.

I don't know which is worse...the USGS warning people to not roast marshmallows over a volcano, or Pasco County Sheriff's Office telling people to not shoot at Hurricane Irma...
