George Bush was flying in combat at 19 and that wasn't uncommon.

lol go take a look at the numbers of non-combat related aviation mishaps and disasters during ww2 and see if this is really a flex.

decisions made during total war are entirely irrelevant.

Why even make that part of the equation in the middle of thunderstorms?

Because these two weren't experienced enough to appreciate risk nor evaluate risk.

Probably tried the run the gauntlet and go above the weather to save fuel and make the charter-owner happy.

Yep, they call em 'sucker holes' for a reason.

You have no idea who the pilot is.

I'd be interested to hear some private plane guys say if they would have flown in this at all?

my father was a pilot his whole adult life. USAF then corporate aviation. He avoided weather at all times and by as wide a margin as possible. He was not one to "dodge" thunderstorms unless he had absolutely no choice. And even then he gave them a wide berth. He's not here to ask, but I can promise you he wouldn't have ever flown into that shite.
That was just a piss poor decision on the left seat's behalf.

When did they release the experience and flight hours of the captain?

Why haven't they released the pilot's name yet?

Who would allow a 20yr old to pilot any plane for them? Wild.

A lot of charters and regionals will hire pilots with very few hours and pair them with a relatively more experienced captain.

When I worked in Denver some of those Great Lakes pilots didn't look old enough to have a driver's license.

not much. and she might have been 100% locked in outside of that one quick text to her boyfriend. but if i'm making a list of people that i think would have a difficult time picking up their phone and sending one single text without doing a single other thing on that phone (just a quick glance at IG or Facebook!), i'm putting 20 year old girls pretty high up. i'm not trying to be combative with you at all. you've had some great contributions to this thread, and you could be entirely right. i just know that the text is a tickmark in the "distracted" column and not in the "locked-in" column.

Not taken combative at all. There just are time in the profession a text on the airplane computer to ops on how many fewer wheel chairs we are going to need deplaning than boarding and it’s just fine to fly the airplane at the same time. But the second you pick up a personal devise it’s why a plane went down and I’ll fight for my fellow pilots who are no longer here to defend themselves.

To pilots it’s our office and everyday life. A brain surgeon vibing to music in the OR is a distraction. A text is not going to distract you from an obvious red echo on the radar return is what I was mainly getting at there.

I agree when all shite hits the fan and tick marks tally up you’re right it’s not in her favor. But I guarantee if they had gone south more text probably would’ve be sent cruising through smoother clearer air ready to be having a pina colada on the beach in Eleuthera

You'd be surprised at how many pilots have some kind of social media channel for their work. The only reason we know about this one is she was involved in a deadly crash.

The chick that landed on I10 in Alabama/Florida a few weeks ago has a social media page. She seemed to handle the plane pretty well.

Someone on IG posted that there were pieces that appeared to be control surfaces more than a mile from the impact site indicating possible break up mid air.

I appreciate your perspective. I’m mostly an armchair quarterback, but I do have a little bit of cockpit time so I’m not entirely talking out of my arse.

They saw this and somehow made the decision to fly directly into it.

For the sake of spreading unfounded rumors, if the pilots were dating each other they should not have been paired if they were 54 and 50, much less something and 20.

They almost certainly did not see that.

A plane pointed straight down is going to lose something before it hits the ground.
