I seriously get all my news and weather info from tigerdroppings. Its always more accurate and faster than any other source.

Pentagon is near Reagan. But everyone flies out of Reagan. Not sure why a Blackhawk would be I that airspace.

Coast Guard choppers fly up and down the Potomac all day, but I’ve never seen them get that close to DCA.
Something must have been seriously wrong for a chopper to be that close to a landing path.

Fox reports it is a small plane.

Plane was on approach to Rwy 1 and the controller switched him to 33. Which is totally normal and common.
However helicopters almost always are kept south the 495 bridge when operating in that direction if they have to cross the river. Tower would hold any approaches if they have a helicopter clearance to cross the river between 495 and Georgetown.
Someone fricked up badly here.

Bad reporting. Regional jet carrying several dozen people at minimum.

Being reported now as an American ERJ from Wichita

What in the actual frick… how does a military copter enter the airspace of approaching aircraft.
One site is stating that Flightaware data identifies the helicopter as a DC police helicopter.

Terrible no matter what, but if it’s ATC screwing up, this will be a ten ton bomb. Experts have warned of near misses by ATC for years.

I assume air traffic rules are similar to maritime navigation rules? The less maneverable vessel has the the right of way?
How were they even in the same airspace? Doesn’t air traffic control actually control these sorts of things?
(I’m asking because I genuinely don’t know when it comes civilian air traffic control vs police or military aircraft)

Does anyone watch Smithsonian Channel’s Air Disasters?
Feels like this will be a future episode.
