Wow…talk about bad fate. 5342 was heading towards Runway 1 and then was told to head to 33. 4 mins later, ATC asked Blackhawk if they had visual, then advised to fly behind that CRJ…48 seconds later you hear a “whoa” then another pilot asks AT. If they saw it

I’m betting (and we’ll unfortunately never know) that he was looking at the wrong aircraft.

I still don’t get how ATC didn’t see the CA and call a go-around. He was gonna lose separation regardless of the helo pilot maintaining visual separation.

At least we don't have to worry about an Alluh Snack Bar situation.

In the video you can see another aircraft departing. When I first watched it I honestly thought that was the plane that was going to crash so I was confused when I saw the explosion. Only on the 2nd watch did I see the dim lights of the arriving aircraft when I knew where the explosion was going to be and paid attention to that area.

Apparently the Potomac even in the middle just near the airport is only 11’ deep per local news.

Yea it’s a pretty shallow river in that area. One of my first thoughts was how deep the wreckage could actually be, and unfortunately the impact after the collision would’ve been pretty devastating as well.

If you are too young to remember the winter crash of an Eastern Flight....into the Potomac in daylight, this has some photos and tape the 1982 crash into the Potomac

Plus it’s night, freezing cold water, and having to escape your seat and the wrecked plane.
