My parents have a house an hour north of Gatlinburg. I go up there 3-4 times a year. I haven’t been to gatlinburg or pigeon forge in over a decade. Shitty tourist traps.

We rent a cabin in the mountains and drive into town when we go.

Kids like the mountain coaster (goat on the roof and another one).

Gatlingburg is way to crowded for 2 lanes and forget finding parking.

We went on some trails and then waded in the creeks some.

F DT I’d Dollywood this year and had a fun time. Ride wait times weren’t to back and the all you can eat granny’s buffet was pretty decent (kids liked it)

After the fire up few years ago,, Gatlinburg had somewhat lost its craft/arts aesthetician and gone full out trashy. Lots of extra ratoo parlors, head shops and vape stores.....it didn't used to be like that. It was always a tourist trap but more family oriented

Yep, this is true. It went from arts and crafts stores to tattoo parlors, and vape shops side by side. We rarely stop there anymore, just drive through. It's sad what it has become.

Gatlinburg can be fun... walk up and down the strip drinking moonshine, cider, wine, and beer. The aquarium is excellent. Don't try to drive the strip unless you've somehow found a very light traffic day.

Pigeon Forge... I just drive around it.

Took the kiddo to Dollywood a month or so ago and he loved it, so I'm sure we'll be back. I was impressed at how fast the lines moved even on a busy day.

I definitely prefer the Townsend side overall, but both have their place.

Do people not research their vacation destinations?

Always boggles my mind when spend thousands of dollars then complain when the place is EXACTLY what it purports to be.

Reminds me of my favorite beach locale. It’s quiet with nothing to do but some very good restaurants. I laugh when reading negative reviews of how “boring” it is. Ummmm….yeah, that’s the whole idea. Why did you go to a boring beach if that’s not what you wanted?

I loathe going to PF/Gatlinburg. It is hell on earth for me. Last time we went to that area, we stayed in Wears Valley and were able to escape most of the crowds, but we did have to make one trip in to PF so our kid could do one of those alpine coasters. Traffic was a nightmare.

Generally, no.

Having worked in the industry for a few decades, they either overthink everything or don't put enough thought into it.

Most are totally ignorant about the location they're going to.

Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge is the #1 vacation destination spot in America several years in a row. Averaging over 10-12 million visitors per year. Most of the locals do call Dollywood...Dollarwood

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge defiantly has gone to shite. Like it was said above, it was always a tourist trap but was more family oriented in the 80's and 90's. I'm just glad my kids were never into that stuff very much; they enjoyed spending time in the park. We might do one or two things in town like Hillbilly Golf or the Titanic Museum, but the rest of the time it was in the park. We also have to hit up the Log Cabin Pancake House just for the sake of family tradition.

It's trashy and cheesy as hell, but still can be fun.

Used to go somewhat often when I was in school at UT.

How is it not as family oriented. Went several months ago and it is nothing but touristy amusements.

I’m betting a good many locals here absolutely hate Dolly Parton for destroying this area.

The ones we asked all seemed to like her and were thankful for the jobs and business she has created.

Any place that's fun will be a little trashy.

Everyone is trashy to someone else. I never worry too much about it.

Just about everyone here loves Dolly. She's pretty much universally revered.

I'm sure there are some old curmudgeons that think differently, but they aren't the norm.

I think the allure of those towns for some is the ability to do some activities for the kids and get out in nature. Sorry, not matter how much I like hiking, my kids are not gonna wanna do that all day.

Agreed…that’s what most families look for in a vacation.

This place is so miserable. I'm glad I don't take anything here too seriously.
