Interesting how the lady in the first pic is still obese.
homeless/poor people are much more likely to eat junk trash snack foods out of convenience and affordability. Chips and soda etc

There’s one homeless dude who’s always at a major intersection near my office. He’s constantly smoking, yet he’s holding a sign that says “hungry, need food.” I sometimes want to stop and tell him that if he’s got the money to buy smokes, nobody is gonna believe he can’t afford food.

I get what you posted, but I would like to add that for you to be ok with being homeless or a squatter (whichever you want to call it), would imply that you had some sort of mental illness, no? I mean no person in his right mind would be ok living that way. Maybe not mentally ill in the fact of needing to be in a nut ward, but mentally ill nonetheless.

Society has a warped idea of normal and "right mind" imo. It seems if we don't neatly fit in some box we get labeled something as abnormal. I know a couple of homeless folks who just don't want to pay $1200 for rent, don't want to work and want to come and go as they please. Sounds like the guys who rode the rails in the old days.

Hell, the brilliant ones might be the schizos.

Some people just like to be free. Some are just too lazy to keep a job.

You're telling me that people are willingly choosing to live on the streets and this makes them sane?

Come on man. Mental illness is the #1 reason for all of this. Drug use is also a reason, which is used to attempt to treat their mental illness.

You pay for more for tanks that we don't need and subsidies to various supposed private industries. Yet no one bats an eye about that.

I was thinking about this very subject driving through NOLA the other day. Whether by choice or not, these peoples circumstances don’t allow them to trash public areas and impose on citizens lives with constant begging. I would be fine with spending taxes on establishing shelters / camps where they could live. Have showers and bathrooms and beds. Feed them and give them work opportunities be it job training or assignment to civil work like picking up the streets. If someone pitches a tent in a public area, the police could pick them up and take them to the shelter.

Be aggressive with the enforcement in urban areas. Those that don’t want to live in the shelters can live in rural areas if they choose. At least they won’t be imposing on everyone else when they live further out of town.

Sure they do. I'll bet most people feel we overpay for military.

Why don't you use real sources instead of guessing? I posted something above.

Instead of being lazy and shooting from the hip, maybe read the thread.

He's right if you want to call laziness a mental illness.

Which was where I was going. It's real easy and dismissive to call it laziness, but I think that's just a manifestation of mental illness.

No one wants to pay to house people, but everyone wants to but when they're on the street. (Not that institutionalization was a good solution.) Either way, you're paying for it one way or another. You just dont see the hidden costs when they're on the street.

You posted an article from the LA Times with zero references for those statistics. Zero.
