In your defense, it appears that most places consider it the 3rd leading causes. That's just opinion though apparently. I think it would be on the very conservative side.

Mental illness is a major contributor to homelessness. In a 2008 survey performed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, 25 cities were asked for the three largest causes of homelessness in their communities. Mental illness was the third largest cause of homelessness for single adults (mentioned by 48% of cities). For homeless families, mental illness was mentioned by 12% of cities as one of the top three causes of homelessness. (National Coalition on Homelessness)
Lack of treatment for the most seriously mentally ill causes the kind of delusions and bizarre behavior that makes living alone or at home with families untenable. As a result, many become people with untreated serious mental illness become homeless and communities are forced to bear the cost of that.

No respectable study has it as the number one cause.
Most homeless is temporary. I imagine long term homeless the rate would be higher, as would drug/alcohol.
The overwhelming cause locally is drug/alcohol use. There's housing for the mentally ill and chronically homeless, but quite a few people choose to live on the street because they can't live by the rules of housing.

So let me see if I understand what you're asking or stating here. Not only should Rodger post you an article from the LA times he should source out the statistics that are quoted in the article? All of this while simultaneously you offer opinions without articles or statistics.

We should form vigilante squads to go around burning up these camps. It’s not like they can do anything to stop you.

AKA the mentally ill.

I think that's just a manifestation of mental illness
Yeah I can get behind that if you to include forms of substance abuse, behavioral problems, etc.
But it does come down to choices for a mass majority of them. Each situation is unique for each person. For some, it's easier to say, "I'm a victim of the Foster Care system" than for them to actually maybe be proactive in doing something like joining the military at 18 and learning a skill. It's a lot easier to not to be responsible for anything. Maybe the system failed in teaching them structure and responsibility vs having everything given to you. Either way, it's laziness that keeps you from getting yourself out of that situation. There is not one human alive that would not help those that are showing a willingness to work hard to better themselves in any situation.

That's overstretching the idea of mentally ill
Behavioral problems aren't necessary to treat medically. Drugs/alcohol can be overcome.
Using your broad stroke, laziness would be mentally ill.

It's a form. It's not as serious as schizophrenia of course. It still plays a part. Chronic depression can have major complications but not look like anything from the outside.

Just how broad of a brush are you painting with? Humanity has always had those who decide to live outside the norm. Who aren't comfortable with the rules the others force on them.
I suppose we should say that Thoreau was mentally ill when he decided to go live in a small cabin at Walden pond?

So laziness is mentally ill
Listen, I'm a recovered alcoholic and it's absolutely unfair to put all addicts in with the mentally ill
There's some crossover but you're just trying to make the situation fit your perception.
Most homeless are functional.

Yep, poor guy was hopeless. All this time we've been viewing him wrong.

I was referring to the behavioral problems, not the laziness per se. I think what most on here perceive as "laziness" is just a manifestation of depression or other issues.
We share the sane background. And I think it's entirely fair to put addiction with mental illness. You know as well as I do same people dont end up drinking themselves to death. Theres nothing close to sanity about that.
I dont think that anywhere near "most homeless" are functional. Far from it.

I agree. She might be homeless but she isn’t starving.

I went down the rabbit hole on Youtube on this one day. It's a guy that interviews homeless people.

Totally disagree.
Is the functional alcoholic mentally ill? No. He's chemically addicted.

2) Came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity
100% of the literature disagrees with you.

No pic, but two weeks ago in San Diego, I saw two homeless people watching a movie on an Ipad.
