Is that on Calliope? I pass by it all the time. It looks like the classiest homeless dwelling I have ever seen.

I think I'd be more inclined to give them a few bucks if they policed the area, cleaned things up, showed a little pride in their work.
That would be a pretty good hustle for a homeless person. Pick an area and keep it well maintained (litter picked up, sidewalks and gutters swept, etc...). When people see them out there working and improving the area I bet most people would be happy to give them a buck or two. But, I guess, if they were ambitious enough to do that they probably wouldn't be homeless in the first place.

These pictures are almost misleading. I’ve visited skid row on multiple occasions, there are no recliners, beds, smiles. It’s nasty, smelly, drug infested, and people aren’t sitting around in recliners. The stench is unbearable from the feces laden streets.

I really don't understand why this is allowed to happen.

That would be a pretty good hustle for a homeless person."

Thing is, it would take a very small amount of work and they could profit off of their efforts for weeks by advertising with a little sign made from the inside panel of an old discarded case of beer.

Another hustle right after local elections: "Homeless. I've cleaned up x number of old political signs locally to make the Northshore a better place. Please contribute."

What amazes me is how they tolerate the homeless there

So what is the answer? I genuinely want to know. I was just in Portland and San Francisco too and it is a problem but not one with an easy fix. Best I can think of is billions of $$$ put into mental health as 99% are mentally ill. For years we tried to get rid of them in Dallas but only managed to push them from one area of the city to another.

This guy looks like he's trying. He's the kind of person who probably won't be homeless long and would benefit from social services. The ones shooting drugs or walking around randomly screaming obscenities aint going anywhere without being involuntarily committed.

For anyone interested the Timesuck podcast with Dan Cummins episode 143, America's Homeless Epidemic is a good listen.

Funny how they rather be in public and homeless instead of a private shanty town. Must be they want sympathy and other people's money.

Just as many if not more do live in wooded areas and other places you can't see them.

Same is happening here. Areas around homeless camps are strewn with trash and litter. For a city that has always prided itself of having clean streets, the city council, who is responsible for this mess by letting homeless camp in just about any public space, is sure looking the other way.

I really wouldn't care if these people just propped up a tent city in the woods and lived if they could keep it clean, but that isn't the case.

Even in my little city its a big problem. Villages send us their undesirables and they have pretty much ruined part of downtown after dark.

Waiting for a train the other day and I watched this homeless guy come out of the gas station and walk back to his tent. He gets there and unloads about 15 bucks in junk food. He pulls out a one liter Sprite and as he is about to take a sip he drops it and it sprays him down. Felt bad for a second but if I'm homeless im not spending the little money I have on crap food

It's waaay overstated

quote:

A relatively small percentage of all homeless people nationwide — 13% to 15% — are mentally ill, but their symptoms — paranoia and delusions — draw attention and mislead others into thinking their numbers are greater, Culhane said.

quote:

However, Los Angeles’ homeless population skews heavily to single adults who have lived in the streets a year or longer — a subgroup with a high incidence of mental health issues. Local authorities estimate that 30% of the county’s homeless people have serious mental illness.
