People appear to be really fired up about pickleball. Some communities are spending large sums of money to build pickleball courts…. even more than dog parks.

Anybody tried pickleball and enjoyed it?

It’s fun. It’s exactly what you think. More physically demanding than ping pong, less physically demanding than tennis.

I will say, I played with an ex D1 line man who’s a trainer now and very athletic. Because of the rules against spiking and the small court, he could essentially just charge the 10ft line and make it very difficult to hit around him

Would routinely have 5-6 pickle ball games in people's driveways in my neighborhood last year. Don't recall seeing a single game recently. Not sure if it was just a fad that ran through real quick, or if people are waiting for the temps to drop again before going outside for exercise.

I've never tried it, but my 17 year-old plays at least 1 night per week with friends. One of my friends from college has lost like 40 pounds since he has started playing (but he was really fat).

I think it's like tennis but you don't need to spend years mastering technique in order to enjoy it. Learning curve is very rapid.

Whatever gets people outdoors and moving around!

Tangentially, A buddy of mine in my neighborhood died of a heart attack recently while playing pickleball with his family.

It’s fun and good exercise. What’s the problem?

It's something even the average person can get into
It's quick, not time consuming
You can do it inside/outside and even on your carport if you want

pickleball is for those too poor for golf and too unathletic for tennis

no one here fits that description

Why is it called “Pickleball”?

Serious question.

There is a tussle goin on in my parish's rec dept. right now that involves them converting some gyms into fulltime pickle ball courts. They have eliminated 2 gyms from the CYO basketball rotation causing them to have to start some games after 9pm. Some of the local codes call for select gym locations to be closed and lights off by 10pm on weeknights.

The last council meeting was a pickle ball shite-show.

Folks that shite on pickleball either haven’t played it or have played and we’re shitty at it (which says more about you).
Also, it’s fun but I don’t get the absolute craze over it. Had a buddy skip a fishing trip to be in a damn pickleball tournament which is stupid as hell.

It was fine. Felt like an easy way to tear something in my middle aged knees though.
