Depends in the location. I've been within a few feet of very large griz in Glacier but they are hazed so generally gtfo when they smell (then hear/see) people. In the water with a gator would be much scarier to me.
But in Alaska, spooking a griz esp w cubs, and I'd take the gator.

Gator first. Can't out run or out climb a bear.
Both are not good situations.

Yeah. Once I was driving on a road in the sierras and came across a black bear in the road. Dude looked right at my truck, then disappeared up the side of the mountain before I even had a chance to comprehend what I was seeing. Bears are unbelievably fast.

i have no idea how i'd beat it. climb up something, i guess. which isn't beating it, i suppose.
but a bear... shite no.

Never run from a bear: A bear can run 50 yards in 3 seconds, or up to 40 mph, faster than a race horse for short distances, and faster than any human, uphill or downhill. Running away will only encourage the bear to chase you.

Gator easy. If you had to fight to get away from a grizzly you have no chance. Other than the fact maybe he just isn't hungry or wants to kill you. With a gator I know the odds are slim but if you could hit him between the eyes you could knock him out.

You're dead either way. Grizzlies kill their prey before eating them. Gators and crocs eat them alive. Also, the grizzly won't eat you if he's not hungry. Crocs will.
Gators are cold blooded animals that just lay around in the sun and water all day. They don't need to eat constantly.
Bears spend their whole fricking day looking for food, especially Grizzlies. They want to be fat come winter. They eat in extreme excess if their environment allows them to. A gator only needs a chicken once a week to live. A Grizzly eats 90 pounds of food per day.
Plus there's a difference between crocs and gators.

I've seen both Brown and black swim. Had to fend off a black bear the other day. Brown bears swim between the islands here and I've seen them overtake deer in the water.

That's like jumping into a tree running away from a Leopard. Bears (particularly Polar) are among the best swimmers in the mammal class (save for whales, seals, otters, and beavers).

And that's what people don't get. That lumbering oafish 450lb bear... He can run a 40 faster than an NFL cornerback. He can run the 100 faster than usain Bolt.
Not fricking with a bear.

I think the only chance against a grizzly would be to try and keep a tree between it and you. While they are far faster in a straight line, I wouldn't think grizzlies have much lateral quickness or endurance to keep up with a human. Just keep side-stepping keeping the tree in front until it's too tired or bored to continue chasing you.
That or play dead are really your only options.
Idk how I'd even begin to evade a gator while in the water.

Young humpback was in the area and we were rowing up to get pix. This swimming bear cruised up to get a closer look.
Their eyesight sucks. If you run, they may pursue just to going out what you are.

I'd choose neither. However, having grown up swimming in the Atchafalaya Basin as a child, we swam above aligators all the time. Crocodiles, they are a more aggressive species.

They can grow to 1500 lbs around here.

People do it everyday. They stay down in the mud and hate the splashing of kids swimming and move along on their own.

True. OP should have said Grizzly or Crocodile.

No.
For personal reference, you have to punch them in the back of the head to knock them out.
Eta: I've seen it once. The guy who did it was built like a gorilla and the think had been shot and knocked out. It came to AFTER we got it in the boat.
He KITFO.
