Wish there was more content on that period.
There was a miniseries on called "Sons of Liberty" on History Channel in 2015.

But be aware that it is a very stylized, modern retelling of history.

Oh, and Hank from Breaking Bad plays Benjamin Franklin:

I don't list stuff I haven't seen

There was a George Washington miniseries in the '80s

I have the seen the Benedict Arnold TV movie in the 90s. It's okay... But it could have been so much better.

Another one is a movie from the early 2000’s called “The Crossing” with Jeff Daniels as George Washington about the crossing of the Delaware. I haven’t seen it but it has generally good reviews.

Many were given lands in the wilderness as payment for service. Hence we have Ohio Military districts, Georgia Militia districts, etc. and survive today in property legal descriptions. Midwest states really were the wild west in those times.

I meant that to be "didn't"

Must have been auto corrected... "Don't" sounds so belligerent: "I don't list nuthin' I ain't seen! Unnastan punk?"

James W Head actually had an oral sex position named after him. These guys knew what they were doing between the sheets, trust me.

Nathan Hale

Was a totally ineffective spy, and that's being kind. He was actually very reckless. If it wasn't for him paying the ultimate price and the unconfirmed quote (that gets told and retold as fact), he would probably have been forgotten by history.

There were many other American spies that performed their jobs to perfection that get overshadowed by him unfortunately.

Great post. I read the book which I suppose led to Turn and it was a good read and a great TV series. Most folks had little idea of Washington's spy network.

Another little known fact, Washington wanted as many Freemasons as he could gather to do certain things as he considered them loyal and trustworthy and they knew certain passwords no one else knew.

Freemasons played a key role in the Revolution and setting the foundation for our government. Also with this group, some who were patriots as well, were some anti-Masonic folks.

Thanks for posting. I never realized there were pics of Revolution war vets. Those baws look tough...probably wore a burlap sack for underwear.

There's a great scene in Young Mr Lincoln where Abe attends a 4th of July parade in Springfield c. 1837. We see a few middle-aged, oldish 1812 vets, then behind them is a carriage with two vets of the AmRev.

Abe takes off his stovepipe hat in respect.

Nathan Hale was very young when he was a spy. He was the only one who actually volunteered because nobody else would. Spying was considered at the time to be a low-life profession. Not something honorable.

Also at the time, there was no training for being a spy. People didn’t really know how to do it. He was just winging it on the fly.

It wasn’t until he was captured and executed that the Continental Army started trying to figure out some rules and ideas to make for more effective spies. That’s when they decided to use cryptography, invisible ink, code names, dead drops, etc.

Nathaniel Hale was given nothing. No kind of training or support, and he was captured during his first mission.

He became famous as a martyr to the cause, not because he was some great spy.

Several of them seem to have a sore or scar on their face. Is that something like pox scars or something else to do with the time period or just a coincidence?
