Proper etiquette would have been to announce to the class that he/she is expecting an important phone call and he/she may have to take it during the lecture (and then he/she steps out into the hall to do so) but then the lecture would start up again once the call was over.

Not so much trashy as it is rude and unprofessional. Depends on the nature of the call. If it was a realtor calling for an update on an offer, unprofessional. If it was a doctor calling with a cancer diagnosis, understandable.
