20k on dogs knees...wow. all my pets are rescues that we give a good life but when it's their natural time it's their time. Not going to put that kind of financial strain on my family. I rest easy knowing our pets got taken in and treated better than they would have anywhere else.
Our dogs have their own recliners. Our outside cats that aren't civilized enough to live in the house have a giant cat condo I built outside. It has two stories and 4 rooms with lights for heat. People say I take things too far.
I have a cat that we love dearly that got hit in the face killing a pigmy rattler yesterday afternoon. No vet visit as they would just do a bunch of unnecessary expensive crap. I haven't lost a single pet to a snake in spite of numerous bites.

pet insurance would've been worth it 100%

that's what pet insurance is for, redneck. Having an ACL tear isn't their "natural time" to die

We did it for our prior golden. They tried to deny a bunch of stuff on a really thin basis. They only relented when I big timed them a bit on a coverage issue and played the attorney card. Which was douchey but it worked.
We ended getting a couple grand worth of items covered but over the lifespan of the policy it probably wasn't worth much. We don't have it for our golden now if that tells you anything.

Hugely worth it for me when I had it. Got it the week we got our puppy. He fricked his knee up a month later. Paid out over 2k for surgery.

Its quite obvious you would pay for the insurance because you'd pay 10k for an extra year with your dog even if you knew that was it.
Not saying there's anything wrong with that but clearly some people might not have money for insurance or 10 fricking grand for 1 more year with their pet even if they tried.
Also as someone said on the first page insurance might not cover ACL tear's/ cancer.

$27 a month is nothing if it pays for annual visits and shots
gotta read the policy though

My dog was poisoned about exactly a year ago and we had to take him to the LSU Vet center and they basically said we can save him for about $5k with like $3k up front. He was only 6 years old so I felt like I couldn't put him down for something that can be fixed. If it was natural causes, I may have went a different route but I would rather spend the money than let my dog die. After that, we got insurance with a company called Embrace. Everything is online. I just submit my claims and they reimburse me after. Obviously, read your policy to make sure it's covering what you need, but it's a small price to pay each month for peace of mind.

I love rescue dogs Wade. I have 3 myself. I just don’t count on them when I need a dog with good knees.

Well, insurance is for accidents and illness. You can purchase a wellness pkg., but I never found those worth it.
OP, it’s a gamble. Good to have and hope you never need it. Most companies, you pay and are reimbursed. With Trupanion, they pay vet direct after you pay deductible and co-pay. But for direct pay option your vet needs to be a participant.

Has anyone on the OT ever purchased pet insurance for their dog? Is it worth it? Is there a company you would recommend? Any advice on this is appreciated.
i have a policy for one of my dogs and cat. i use trupanion. they do not cover routine care of animals. They are specifically for emergency and diagnosed long term illness care/control.
is it worth it? Like any form of insurance, it can be. if you are the type of person who would pay for your animals expensive surgeries, diagnosis tools, medications, then likely it will pay out at some point. Who knows though. your dog could be healthy for 15 years then suddenly pass quickly and peacefully. in that case though, i still think its worth it for the peace of mind that if anything happened in t hose 15 years it was covered.
some folks in here saying its ridiculous to spend money on insurance or your pets in generally. i know people who pay twice as much for multiple tv streaming services every month. to me thats ridiculous.

Again, pet insurance isnt people insurance. Different plans cover different things. Some companies cover the costs and you reimburse what isnt covered, and others you pay upfront. Some allow 6 month financing with no interest, others dont.
Its no longer as cut and dry as not having the funds immediately available. There are all kinds of ways now for customers to afford vet care, some just dont believe in it. Like snake bite guy in this thread.

I would argue self insuring by putting aside a set amount monthly into a high yield savings account would be better. I had a dog that was insured and had a higher than average amount of medical issues, so the insurance was used a decent amount. I'd say at best over the life of the plan we broke even. For a dog of average health I would think it would certainly be a money losing proposition.
However, what you're really paying for is the ability to not have to choose between your pet's life and coming up with thousands of dollars for an emergency event. Like I said, I think self insuring is a better way to go assuming you have the financial wherewithal to cover any incidents that come up before you've built up the savings account. But insurance is better than not doing anything and then having to put your dog down because it costs too much to save them.

dang that seems excessive. is it something to do with the breed you have OR are they working dogs (cattle, hunting, etc.)?
edit: I see one of your responses now that it's genetic

Funny this thread was posted because I am at the vet right now and just found out my dog has serious anemia. Vet just said it's amazing that she can even stand up with how bad her red blood cells count is. Just took her back for more testing.
I am going to cry when I get the bill.
Update: After a scan, vet believes it is cancer, but cannot 100% confirm without biopsy. Vet says blood transfusion will let her last longer, but it's gonna be quality of life care until she passes, which she is estimating to be in the range of a week. Sucks man.
