Wut? There are shite loads of local small restaurants and businesses that are still operating, and they all seem to be getting a lot of customer support.

Most are doing 10-15% of their normal sales. Customers are supporting but not nearly enough to keep them afloat

Only you could totally take a small anecdote and make widespread economic analysis which is terribly wrong. Small business is dying. They're getting loans to cover the loss of revenue.

There's a reason that unemployment went up 5x virtually overnight.

Even the restaurants that are doing the best during this time of takeout-only are not at all seeing anywhere near their regular numbers. They're far from doing great. Those in particular will make it out of the mess okay, but there's a lot of small places shutting down or on the brink of shutting down.

Takeout and customer support isn't going to get you anywhere near where you need to be, although I'm sure it is appreciated.

Source - Friends with management at one of the most popular restaurants in town. They're doing okay and staying afloat, but they're far from great.

Places like Ingas are absolutely dying.

Depends. You can at the present time.

You said the government is picking that outcome, which I just don't agree with.

exactly. Not only is it temporary, people who were furloughed for example won't be eligible for unemployment after their company gives them their job back and they turn it down.

Yeah, we just have to hope the employees in question aren't too privy to all that's going on. I could be wrong - But I had read that the employer would have to report to unemployment office that the employee has been given the chance to come back and declined to do so.

I imagine with hundreds of thousands of people in the same situation, the chances of unemployment office being available to deal with each of these cases quickly is low. So who knows..

Theres absolutely no doubt they are.

The mandates are precisely why we have overwhelming unemployment currently. The loss of revenue currently is staggering.

How are you equating that to choosing large corporations over small business though?

I'm guessing you just think nothing should have been done with regards to shut downs and social distancing.

Fair enough. I don't think any of it is being done intentionally either.

But realistically speaking, the people who suddenly find all of this money in their hands that weren't making it before are probably not taking their money to the struggling local boutiques or something. They're probably heading to buy products from companies that will be fine.

Not that I blame them necessarily. I don't expect these people to take their stimulus and invest it in local small businesses when they actually want a new TV or iPhone Just that the stimulus isn't necessarily going to do a ton to stimulate those small businesses, as far as the money going into the hands of people.

EDIT - Luckily, this is only a % of people. Many people currently receiving unemployment were very gainfully employed at nice jobs and unfortunately lost them. Those people are likely just saving the money.

Big box store and Amazon doesn't have the same limitations that some small business does under the current mandates.

They're literally operating under a different set of rules.

I can give you that point. But I will add that I think at least some of it will, which is better than none of it.

More people can fit in large buildings while still keeping space.

And Amazon ships to home, so not sure what different rules you're referencing with that.

Deeper pockets allow companies to withstand more adversity, that's nothing unique to this situation.

Correct. The local camera shop is shut down, but people can visit Costco or shop via Amazon for those products.

Many small businesses will not reopen.

Are you just overlooking government mandates or just being obtuse?

Do you realize how many small businesses are shut totally down?

The irony of you calling my obtuse while asking me this is pretty neat.

Nah, I didn't realize at all. When did that happen?

Look, I'm pro MAGA all day, but some of you frickwads need some Jesus in your life. People are being laid off for no reason that they, or their employer, could avoid, with no other unemployment options. I still have my job, so does my wife, and we're thankful everyday for that, but I'm not going to judge someone for getting temporary help right now. Better my tax dollars go to poor baws that got Covid dry fricked than to $1500 gubment toilet seats and catered lunches for Pelosi and her puppets.
