Isn't the payment capped at your existing income if it's less than the full available?

ETA: Guess not

Yeah, it's not long term. I don't have an issue with it either. In most cases the government asked these businesses to close or limit operations.

I don't have a problem with it either.

Although - I've already seen 2-3 weeks of people getting drunk/high/etc. with groups of friends at their houses every night with their new found time off. Which I don't blame them one bit... But I can't imagine what it will be like when they're pulling in more than they likely made in tips on average prior to this.

We are looking to hire a couple people for a pretty easy money type of job right now, which normally people would be jumping on, but can't get a single bite because nobody wants to actually do work for what they could make sitting on the sofa. Again, don't blame them. But it sucks for us.

Ok. But Texas max is like $450 and adding another $600 in most cases will be a bump in weekly cash flow that most will blow. Plus am I correct in what I'm hearing that you get back pay of that $600 from the day you were laid off??????

Some, yes, but not most. The amount was selected so that, in conjunction with state benefits, the money would provide 100% income replacement for the average worker. Some will get more and some will get less, but it's all temporary.

What about places like Texas? Their maximum state is $454. That plus $600 seems high. But maybe it is really hard there to hit that maximum?

The 600/week is retroactive to March 28

Not sure, but it's really hard to even get through on the phone with them. People have called this sands of times with no success over the past couple weeks.

If you were eligible for benefits on March 28 then they'll back pay for the weeks you could have gotten it. So the first fed check could be a big one, depending on how many weeks back pay it'll be.

Yeah, even if the $600 was permanent, that's only just under $45k a year. That's quite a pay cut for a lot of people who lost their jobs. I know I wouldn't want to be in that position.

But people in this thread are right - A lot of our workforce makes around that amount (or less) so this is quite a nice little vacay for them. That being said, I really don't care. It is a terrible situation all around and the people who are gainfully employed and work hard deserve it. You'd have to be some kind of smug turd to want to see people struggling on $247 just because they "shouldn't make more than usual".

The months when thing open back up and we can't get people back into their jobs will suck, but that's really only people who were in non-permanent jobs. Anyone who was in a job they planned to stay in long term will return if they know what is best for their future.

Ok. If true... Then pop a stimulus check on top of that, then you have ALOT of people that could have like $4000 at one time. Sounds good but IMO they will pays the bills they need to then blow the rest thinking "well I get another 8-9 hundred the next week anyway. I understand the need, but most won't save any of the extra money they get.

A state legislator got in trouble for making a similar comment. She was right though.

But the idea is for people to blow this money and heat up the economy.

The only bummer is that the bars/restaurants won't be seeing it, being that they're closed.

Yeah I know but they have proved as much as 4 months for this additional $600. If we get pass this thing and business are trying to open up in the next 2 months this could become a problem.

exactly. Not only is it temporary, people who were furloughed for example won't be eligible for unemployment after their company gives them their job back and they turn it down.

Correct. The gubment is picking winners and losers here. BigCorp grocery stores and online companies will thrive, small business will die.

Wut? There are shite loads of local small restaurants and businesses that are still operating, and they all seem to be getting a lot of customer support.
