If I’m at the front of the line at the light I usually watch the other traffic signal change and then check both directions before entering the intersection. Seen too many assholes run red lights so if someone honks from behind they can frick off. Not getting plowed into because someone else is in a hurry.

If you’re at the front it’s your obligation to be ready. There are plenty of large intersections where I give the 4 cars running the red light time to clear before I go.
