Incorrect, sugar is roughly 50/50 glucose to fructose. Corn syrup has more fructose than glucose.

If excess glucose is consumed in the diet, it will first be stored as glycogen, and secondarily as fat. Fructose on the other hand, takes a different path. When fructose is consumed, it is exclusively metabolized in the liver, where a particular enzyme, fructokinase, will allow for the uptake of fructose This is most likely the cause of NAFLD.

You're not entirely wrong in what you're saying, but the characterization of HFCS being worse in terms of its impact on health is not supported.

LINK

And there's more than one HFCS and the one most commonly used is less than 50% fructose whereas sugar is ALWAYS 50%.

quote:

the most commonly used form of HFCS only has 42 percent fructose in comparison to table sugar’s 50 percent. Honey, the beloved natural sweetener, has 49 percent. Standard corn syrup doesn’t have any fructose because it’s 100 percent glucose, which explains how HFCS got its name: It was a kind of corn syrup with more fructose than normal.

This is true for every form of natural sugar you see advertised on organic food because sucrose, the molecule you know as sugar, is made up of one fructose molecule and one glucose molecule. Honey is a bit different, as its fructose and glucose molecules aren’t bound together, but instead are free-floating—much more like HFCS.

quote:

Now, it is true that your body handles fructose metabolism differently from glucose metabolism, and products made with only fructose can cause metabolic issues as well as digestive problems. Pure fructose more directly impacts blood sugar, and eventually can lead to decreased insulin sensitivity and high triglycerides. But as a 2008 review of HFCS notes, those differences are irrelevant when talking about the health impacts of any of these commonly used sugars: “Sucrose, HFCS, invert sugar, honey, and many fruits and juices deliver the same sugars in the same ratios to the same tissues within the same time frame to the same metabolic pathways.”

So, I stand by what I said.

The chemicals in diet soda are worse.

Cardiovascular disease, cognitive disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s, colon cancer, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, inflammation, obesity, kidney disease, liver disease, pancreatic cancer, etc…

These are the risks of sugar intake according to the AMA.

Sodas of all kinds are unhealthy for you, whether diet or not. That’s why most people consume them as a treat.

I still drink at least one Topo Chico every day. I don’t really like the flavored versions. I think they’re better than Perrier and San Pellegrino. Sparkling water habit made pretty much all soft drinks taste horrible/syrupy to me.

A lot of fatties defending soda in this thread. Water is about the only thing that will quench your thirst. Coconut water is close, but sodas and gas diet drinks will never come close. Nothing is better than a cold water when you are hot. Only time I ever drink a soda is if I eat fast food and it comes with one.

Diet soda is disgusting. I don't know why anyone drinks that crap. Stick to water and milk.
