People who are married but don't live in the same city, what's that all about?

I met a woman today who has been married for 5 years and claims to be in love with her husband, even says they are best friends but doesn't even live in the same state as him. She claims they meet in high school and three weeks later he moved to another state. She says they were together for 4 years and now have been apart for a year and will be apart for 3 years total because of work. What do you make of this type of "marriage"?

If I have learned nothing else about relationships, no one mold fits.

I know a couple like that. Her family are uber devout catholics and chummy with the bishop, etc, and she teaches at a catholic school. Her husband lives in another city and they have almost no contact, but divorce would be socially unacceptable.

Is he plowing other broads while she remains faithful?

They probably have weird videochat sex. You can dress it up and call it what you want but at the end of the day you're just watching each other masturbate

He's kind of a douche, so probably.

They might just be doing it for tax purposes. Beyond that I can't imagine being married but living apart (exception being military service).

I have friends who are in their early 40s and with 2 children and career opportunities that were too good to pass on is going to put them in different countries for a while. They will be apart for 3 years ,but it will also set them up for the future. They will meet up 2-3 times a year until the job brings him back. He is retired military and she was also in the military for 6 years so they a kinda used to it as well.

There is no career opportunity worth living in a different country and seeing my kids 2-3 times a year

How did you make it work while being away from one another?

Well, cuts down on the nagging I bet!

Sometimes work and family responsibilities cause this to happen. As my children got older the grew tired of having to move every two to three years because of my profession (I am in the Army). So I did a year at the Army War College by myself, was stationed at home for a year, then two years in battalion command and two years in brigade command (four years consecutively) so my children could remain in the same location and graduate from the same high school. It was tough and put a tremendous strain on our marriage. But we came through it and are stronger than ever (married now for 31 years).

That is you others are different. I would say it is definitely not the mainstream ,but being in Iraq I have talked to contractors with families who went because they were setting their family up for the future. I have friends on their 3rd, 4th, and 5th deployment who are married with children.

I had to do something similar. My wife and I are both retired military. When I retired she still had 2.5 years left and came down on orders for Korea and I moved back home. After her tour in Korea the army sent her to San Antonio, I didn't move there because we had purchased a home and the kids started school so I wasn't uprooting our entire lives for a year and a half to just move right back.
