Seems like the general consensus is for Military families this practice is common. At least in my experience and now most of the replies on this thread.

Act like a mature adult and not be an a-hole. It's not hard at all.

That is you others are different. I would say it is definitely not the mainstream ,but being in Iraq I have talked to contractors with families who went because they were setting their family up for the future. I have friends on their 3rd, 4th, and 5th deployment who are married with children.

What do you think would be the answer if you asked those kids if they'd rather their dad come home or be "set up for the furniture"?

You only get one chance to see your kids grow up. Money isn't going anywhere

Oh get off your moral high horse. People who usually say I would never leave my kids are the ones who have never left their home town and use their children as a Facebook prop and a tax refund. Some that do this want to provide a better life for their children. Sending them to private schools and making sure that a roof over their childrens head in a safe clean neighborgood is a noble thing to do. Come college time my friends children will not have to worry about tuition and the hope is that their children will have a better life than them. They definitely have had and will have a better start than their parents.

You can do all of these things without leaving your children for the majority of the year

My wife's parents are like that. She lives in Thailand (where they're from) and he lives in Munich (for work). He gets to go home usually once every couple of months or so, and she gets the make the trip to Germany every now and again.
Not ideal, but hopefully he will be able to go home in the next year or so. Already been 7 years... crappy thing is that they work for the same company and used to both be stationed in Copenhagen together.

If you already have a good job in a good career field. Some people have to move around to get into higher positions to be able to do this. I mean every marriage is different and some people don't want to move away from their children. Others do it to provide and give more. Either way people should do what's best for them and their family.

You ever hear the saying "nobody ever wishes they'd have worked more during their life while on their death bed"?

There's a reason that exists

There's a little boy out in the driveway
His basketball in hand
Saying Daddy could we play a little one on one
You pat him on the back and say not now son I'm a busy man

His sister's out on the sidewalk
Setting up a lemonade stand
Hey Daddy don't you want to buy a glass from me
You say maybe later, can't you see I'm a busy man

You got to go, got to run
Hit it hard and get it done
Everyone can see you're going far
You got responsibilities
A crazy schedule that you keep
And when you say that time's a-wasting
You don't know how right you are
Busy man

There's a woman in the bedroom crying Saying I thought we had plans
You say honey I'm sorry I'll make it up
When the job slows down and I'm not such
A busy man

You got to go, got to run
Hit it hard and get it done
Everyone can see you're going far
You got responsibilities
A crazy schedule that you keep
And when you say that time's a-wasting
You don't know how right you are
Busy man

Have you ever seen a headstone with these words "If only I had spent more time at work"

There's a call one day from the office
They need you down in Birmingham
You say no way, the weekend's mine
I got plans with the kids and a date with my wife I'm a busy man

You got to go, got to run
Hit it hard and get it done
Everyone can see you're going far
You got responsibilities
A crazy schedule that you keep
And when you say that time's a-wasting
You don't know how right you are
Busy man

Kids would be better off with parental involvement and a lesser school than absentee parents

See lots of it in the military, sometimes married couples don't even live on the same continent.

My parents do this now. I'm grown and my one sibling is in college. Granted my parents are only really about 3 hours away from each other. My dad does 99% of his work in one place and my mom doesn't want to leave LA and give up TOPS and being there for my sister should she need her. They see each other pretty much every weekend and we're all grown so it's not like they have shite to do anyway. I don't really see a problem with it.
