Correct, I’m referring to people living somewhere other than a short proximity from the place they were born. I don’t have the study in front of me, but it’s more than 1/3 as I recall. And another 20ish% that never live out of state. This is U.S. in general, not LA-specific. I was just making an observation on that part.

Obviously people go on vacations in life. Even then, as was said earlier in the thread, tons of people just go to the same place year after year and even stay in the same house/cabin/condo without going to explore something new. I just do not get that line of thinking

How about the people who go to the same beach 2 hours from home and rent the same house every single year?

What if they own the house? Do you realize how many people from Nola, BR and Laffy that own second homes along the coast from Holly Beach to 30a and they go to these houses just about every weekend and on Holidays?

Gotcha, yeah that makes sense. A lot of people that I know live within 30 miles of where they grew up. I don't necessarily see anything wrong with that (I'm in the same boat after moving back to this area), but the vacation thing is something I don't relate to. It's due to people generally not liking change, IMO.

Most people do. Different town, same type of places. Restaurants, breweries....

Most people are clueless about hidden treasures of places they are going.

I mean they wouldn't be "hidden treasures" otherwise.

Nah, a little research goes a long way.

I work with people on vacation for a decent part of the year and am stunned at how little most know about the places they visit. Most never get past Trip Advisor which is rarely accurate.

One of the biggest segments of tourism growth locally is "food tourism" which is funny because you can find similar restaurants and food in many of these people's hometown, and the scenery here is world class.

How bout exploring a new city? Drive down and tube the Guadeloupe, kayak through downtown, tour the capital, check out some Texas history museams, hike the Barton Creek trail, check out beautiful Lake Travis, or many of the other fun things to discover.

Nope....tell me what bars to go to and where I can hang out with Louisiana people. Hope everyone enjoys the game, but good heavens, open your mind a little bit.

I guess my point is, if you're a person who really likes "hidden treasures" it would seem weird to gripe and lament that EVERYBODY doesn't like and want to seek out your hidden treasures.

I don't see any griping and lamenting...

Its just strange how people seek out the familiar wherever they are.

It's particularly bad in cruise ports.

I guess don't get what the point is of carrying on about what other people (everybody?) are doing or not doing then.

Its nothing new. Learned in a marketing class in college that tourists favorite place to eat when they traveled (this was in the 80's) was McDonalds.

I get it. But it just seems strange to spend thousands, travel thousands of miles to do the same exact things you do at home. If it were just a handful of people it wouldn't stick out, but it's actually normal human behavior.

I will say, this is sort of an interesting phenomenon. I used to try to seek out the "hot" restaurants in each locale I visited, until I slowly came to realize that all of such places are basically doing the same thing all the other "hot" restaurants are doing everywhere else.

Now, I just make it a point to try to find something I can't find at home, which often leads to what otherwise may be seem by locals in such locales as the local "cliches."

It can sometimes lead to a dilemma if one is truly hung up on being an "authentic traveler" with the need to prove such on Tigerdroppings after your trip.

When my MIL goes on vacations, she'll just sit in her hotel room and watch movies. Doesn't matter if she's at a 5 star beach resort or a motor coach inn, she's not leaving that room.

Partially grates on my FIL, but it also gives him a chance to go do whatever. Given the choice, I think he prefers it that way.

Baton Rouge is so late to everything that I still find plenty of places doing things not being done here.

Plus I’m a sucker for the whole deal - the decor, ambiance, cocktails, etc.

Yeah, I certainly think social media has changed some people's perceptions and they want to do and see all the cool stuff at the hip new places, but I agree that they're pretty much the same with different names.

I have no real issue but living in a cruise town the scene around certain stores is just incredible, almost obscene. Yet you can find these same stores at every cruise stop, and every single tourist city. Particularly the jewelry stores, which I just can't grasp.

We plan to stop on the way to Austin to buy some fine Texas beef jerky to snack on while tailgating. I don't need anymore Texas culture than that.
