I’m more of a Gin guy. But a decent bourbon on rocks goes down okay too.

Sprite? Who mixes bourbon with Sprite. Gross.

Nearly $100. Tasted like straight rubbing alcohol.
A few suggestions - a few drops of water or cubes are my preference, they "open it up" as the real experts say. Same for scotch, a lot of guys prefer a few drops of water.
Also I don't equate high price to good taste. You want to stay away from the really low-end stuff, but there are quite a few mid-range buys that ain't bad. For example, basic Evan Williams is garbage that could take the finish of a speedboat. EW 1783 small batch is pretty darn good for $27/bottle. Same with Canadian Club, the basic stuff is awful but the 18 year is solid. The "upmarket" varieties of Jack and Makers are not my thing either (Gentleman and 1846 respectively), if I'm going upmarket I'll buy some smalle label stuff like Ranger Creek out of Texas or Blade and Bow.
There are also lots of different flavor profiles, I had to try a lot before I found something I liked. Buying a very expensive bottle without knowing your preferences is like buying a $1m race car and complaining about the ride without ever getting used to a sportscar.
Talk to your friends and bartender and try a lot of stuff from a $25-50/bottle with a few cubes and come back in 90 days and you'll share with us something you like.
Also, if you don't have a familiar bartender at a local watering hole, you are missing out. You don't have to be a heavy drinker, but make friends and get to know one or two. They will help you find new whiskeys and wines and let you know about special events, reservations, make introductions in the community. Always a solid move.

It's like many things that dint taste great thebfirst tune you try it. Few people like black coffee right away, but then some build a taste and don't like it any other way. Not many teens will pick up a beer and think it tastes delicious. But most people learn to love it. I built a taste for bourbon quickly after years of mixing it with soda. To the point I gave up drinking altogether because it became a problem, haha. A nice spicey, smokey glass of bourbon before bed turned into 2, 3, then more.

You can get some pretty good Elijah Craig for like 30 bucks.

I can only drink it neat. Watered down is terrible. The higher the proof, the better flavor IMO. I've had some Elijah Craig barrel proofs in the high 130s, so good. Same with the Old Forrester barrel proofs, Jack Daniel barrel proofs etc. Coy Hill is in the 140s, one of the best pours I've ever had neat.

You need to start slowly, grasshopper. Start by “sipping” Old Forrester 86 proof over ice for a full month. Then mix 50% OF 86, 50% Wild Turkey 101 over ice for a month. Then OF 86 neat for 2 weeks. Then mix 50% OF 86, 50% WT 101 neat for 2 weeks. Then WT 101 neat until you become a man.

There are some really good whiskies and Bourbons that I enjoy on the rocks.
But honestly I just prefer wine at this point. I don't drink during the week, and its usually just a couple on the weekends so I now I just drink what I actually really like.
And that is wine.

Haven’t tried this one yet, but the whole idea of it sounds very gimmicky.

I've just recently gotten on the bourbon train and it's taken a little time to learn my preferences, but to say it all tastes like rubbing alcohol is ludicrous.

Thats how you ruin good alcohol.

You sound pleasant.
Was sitting in a traffic jam so probably not my best morning.
In my defense the OP is committing bourbon abuse, it’s not cool.
Just get some cheap stuff and pour it in a coke for all I care, but there’s no point spending money on good bourbon or scotch if you are gonna douse it in other stuff.
It’s like making a hot dog out of a filet.
Can you do it? Sure.
Is it a waste? Absolutely.

Amen. Do not put anything in my coffee, I hate stuff in coffee.
Just buy good coffee, and be thankful you have anything if the coffee is bad at a jobsite.

1st glass always has an ice cube in it to cut it some. after that, its all brown gold!

the only whisky i was ever able to drink without mixing, on the rocks, was Crown XO...
other than that they all burn like a son of a bitch and don't exactly "taste" good...
