I lived over there for a few years, and you're absolutely right.
And it ain't close.

3) multiple 3 day weekends.
4) setting a vacation far in advance as to give oneself something to look forward to.
In the 28 years I sold advertising for a weekly publication I never took off more than a week at a time. Really never did that with any job I had.
I did take lots of three day weekends like others have mentioned. Because we had Monday deadlines, I always took off on Fridays. To be honest, for the last 10 years I worked, I never worked more than a half day on any Friday.
As I said before, I had a cool boss that understood he didn't need to mess with anyone that was pulling their weight. He also knew if he needed me, I'd do whatever needed to be done to help out.

Decide on what time you start and what time you want to end. While in that time, give it all you have. Once you reach your timeline, put any communication device related to work away.
I personally carry two phones for this reason, one for business and the other for personal.

Have a kid. I just had one a month ago and priorities have changed. Have no problem putting down laptop at 5pm to enjoy time with my daughter.

They're are lots of variables in your post. Inside/outside or pure outside. If you're pure outaide in my company you are on call 24/7 no excuse. Hell if you are draw against commission you are worse than that.
If your are salary with bonus, you better put in 36 hours in a 24movie hr day.
Sales is tough. Get a customer base, monthly sales from your clients then you can cruise. But prior to that, you are a bitch.

Well the best way I have found to approach this is you just have to actually make yourself step away from technology.
You owe it to your family, to make a couple of hours a day, technology free.
Actually turn off your phone and spend time with the people that matter.
No matter how much BS you try to sell me on, the truth is that from 6-8pm, no one is calling you for business.
Spend that time with your family or enjoy some you time

For about 10 years, I had a job that demanded my attention almost 24/7. I was never really off or on vacation. I have since changed careers, where now I have no need to take the job home. I make less money; a lot less, but I can't even explain how nice it is to be away from the stress.

If you are on the East Coast and sell nationwide you will get tons of calls then, even more if you sell internationally.

I have a work phone/laptop and a play phone/laptop.
As soon as quitting time hits, every work thing goes off.

Exactly, I've spent many nights on the phone with a 16 hr delay. The whole sales timeline depends on your sales job.
I've waited up till 1 am to get an answer for my customer.
But most of that relies on a position that understands it's responsibilities.
Not someone asking about disconnect.

Again, there is very little you can explain to me as why you can't step away from technology to give your family uninterrupted time each day.
You owe it to them as a father and husband.
Only being truly available to your family on a weekend and even then, parts of a weekend because of technology is complete BS.

I just made my last call for the day, still am coordinating via text what's going to happen at 6 tomorrow, and sent my last email at 945.

Find some good hobbies.
I have trouble disconnecting too, but I just make sure to find good things to do. Run, hike, play soccer, cook, play board games.... I easily disconnect then.

You are confusing technology with job responsibility.

I'm in sales and completely disconnect when I go on hunting trips. No phone service means no service from me. But the other 9 months of the year, I'm typically bell to bell, no days off; and I'm usually the top guy because of it. Gotta have the downtime to truly grow and produce when you're there.

I would also suggest setting proper expectations with your customers in building a relationship on business value and not a friendship. You can't sustain friendships with every customer, but you can provide sustainable value to each of them through your business relationship.

You can call it job responsiblity or what every you want but if you can't step away from a piece of electronics and do something as simple as take your kid on a walk, read a book with them, do a puzzle, or play hide and seek each day, you are doing one thing and that's about it.
