The disconnect isn't just a sales job issue, it's an American manufactured issue. Most other countries, especially in Europe, are able to turn it off and go home without being attached to their job. You ought to see them on vacation. They leave for weeks without a care in the world because the system is set up so that someone else is actually doing your work while you're gone!

at some point, you just have to realize it'll be there in the morning.
As a project manager/project engineer, i used to worry about my projects non-stop. Woke up a 4 a.m., checked phone for emails, went to work, worked till 6ish, went home, checked emails, worried about budgets and project costs, etc.
Got to a point that i didn't know what to do. Couldn't decompress, couldn't relax. I'd even check on my project while on "vacation". Never let myself just get away from it all. Took me changing jobs to finally do it. Now, i don't have my phone connected to my work email, and at knock off time, that's it. I don't worry about anything going on until 4 a.m. the next morning. When i'm home, it's daddy/husband time

That's much easier if you don't work in a 24/7 365 industry like Oillfield and Maritime.

I follow this rule...I don't answer emails at night unless I know there is some extremely important time sensitive thing that has to be done. Mostly I'm off email by 6. Don't check your email on weekends. Believe me you can still be successful and gain piece of mind.
I do well enough and decided long ago I have no interest in selling my life to any company. Companies have zero loyalty.

So you never want to own your own business? You're content with working for the man for the rest of your life?

How are those connected? I would say that if I want to work my arse off 24/7, then I'll do it for myself and not for someone else.
I would never sell my life to any employer, it's not necessary to be successful in sales.

I'm in sales and have a family of six kids at home.
My strategy is this. Almost everyday when I walk in the door, my phone goes on silent. I kiss the babies and then take 10 minutes to do nothing. After that I play with my kids and do chores/ projects around the house. All the while, my phone is on silent and stays that way until after dinner when I sit down with a beverage of choice. I'll check it out make sure there are no fires then put the phone in the mud room.
I've almost never missed something I shouldn't have.
2 important points
First I provide in my emails sig and voicemail an emergency number to call and secondly (most importantly) this is not an absolute! Balance is the key

37 year sales veteran here...
It's not easy to disconnect. My best solution was to adopt the attitude of " I work to live, not live to work".
Make sure you develop some hobbies and interests outside of work. And it helps to have a supportive family as well.
Good luck....nothing happens until a sale is made

I don't see what that has to do with what I posted but no, I don't want to own my own business.

I do exactly that and I still unplug. once again, balance is the key. if you train people to wear you out, they will.

People in sales
Good luck. Was in sales for 10 years. Grew to hate it, the constant "what have you done for me lately" attitude of the employee and the buyers made me want to kick my dog(s). Finally got out, and will never (Hay-zeus willing) ever get back in sales. I HATE sales with every fiber of my being.

sales is a dead end job....most salesmen dont have what it takes to own their own business....they're too lazy..you fit right in

I'm not in sales, but I have to be available 24/7. I used to go on 1-2 week long benders out of the country to disconnect. Now I have a kid and have to be responsible, so I just don't look at my phone after hours unless it's an emergency.

if you actually believe that.
Sales is a great example of meritocracy at work.

Tgr8 is being a troll. Sales people (at least good ones) do own their own business. I personally take ownership for my territory and treat it as if it were my own money and business. Because essentially it is. I reap what I sow or am able to enjoy the fruit of my labors.

It takes a special person to be successful at sales. Either a sociopath or someone extremely good at developing relationships. I'm fairly good at the latter but found I had to fake it too often and it doesn't appeal to me. I took a job in Oct. as Sales Director of a company and jumped to Ops when an Ops. manager position came open.

It really does... our sales guys spend so much time with customers that they very rarely spend any time with their own friends or family.
It sounds great to say you are hunting, fishing, entertaining, etc every weekend/weekday but I can tell you that shite gets old....it gets old faster when you realize most customers are dicks but you still have to hang out with them
