The Pentagon is seeking to provide as many as 100,000 military-style body bags for potential civilian use as the U.S. warns that deaths could soar in the coming weeks from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has requested 100,000 body bags, known as Human Remains Pouches, through an interagency group that directed it to the Defense Department. The Pentagon is looking into buying more bags and will draw some initially from a stockpile of 50,000 it maintains, according to two people familiar with the request.

It's been out of hand for weeks now. A portion of what we were warned about weeks ago is just now beginning to come to fruition. It takes a couple weeks for those most seriously affected to die. We're on the doorstep of that time frame now.

Is it though?

You didn’t expect the defense department to have supplies on hand for a conflict?

ETA: although I guess your surprise is warranted. Apparently we weren’t supposed to expect the 4-5 agencies tasked with safeguarding public health to have any medical supplies or equipment available for what may end up being the most predictable disaster we’ve ever encountered.

I actually thought not enough. We must have gotten rid of a lot of older ones.

That's not that many in the grand scheme of things.

Think Katrina.

To me it’s quite a jump from the 4-5k we have now to 100,000

It seems low but I guess when the last big one was around 58,000 KIA and then just around 7000 KIA for Iraq and Afghanistan then hubris sets in.
