None of that put me in danger though. I did a lot of drinking, but it was almost all 100% voluntary. And if you're a good sport about the stupid shite, they take it easy on you.

When I was in school a lot of fraternities restricted drinking as part of pledgeship. Sober driving, no weeknight drinking, stuff like that.

Which was probably the worst form of hazing for them

Oh we had to be sober drivers.

Just not all of us at once. There'd be like shifts of 10 per night. Worst was when it was 20 degrees in Oxford, we just had to sit in the car outside the bar keeping it warm until they were ready to leave.

Then you'd have to bring them to get late night food.

When I was an active though, that was the best shite ever. Free cab service every night

Also, I was never a dick to kids. There was always a couple guys in each class that got off to hazing. Those people fricking suck.

If I made kids do things, it was funny shite, then I'd ask them to come hang out and party with us.

Had one kid I found out was a damn good violinist and I got him to wear his concert tuxedo, stand on a table, and play music for the birthday party for some girl I was trying to hook up with. But he was drinking and having fun with us too. (damn good at violin too)

Would have a few guys over to my house for parties and make them clean up after or the next morning, I guess that's the meanest thing I did. I was a softy.

Also would love to text them "Go to walmart, get whitey tighties, dental floss, lube, and super glue and be at my house in an hour"

Then I wouldn't bring up what they bought and pretend I never asked and get them to hang out. I had to do that and I was freaaaking out in Walmart getting that stuff.

All these frickers should be thrown in jail, for a long time. Reading that made me sick to my stomach.

Same, it was always dumb stuff. Not me, but an example being two of my pledge brothers having to go eat at a sports bar in front of a window that faced the sidewalk (lots of people passing by) and feed each other their meals. Girls would obviously stop and laugh at them and take pictures any whatnot.

Even the assholes didn't do anything that would really cause a problem, they were just dicks. Like, you did X wrong, come back to my apartment at a inconvenient time tomorrow and try again. Then they'd find something else wrong, etc.

This. I've seen mother frickers get thrown through sheet rock walls for crossing the line with hazing.

Dumbass is too kind of a term as that term is reserved for stupid people who aren't evil and don't put and leave innocent human beings in danger with medical emergencies.

These frat bros knew what they were doing was completely fricked up and illegal, knew that Piazza was probably going to die when he didn't respond to their signals attempts to wake him up and tried to cover it up in favor of their own self interest.

Can you imagine how devastated with grief his parents and family must feel knowing that someone could've helped their dying son but the people available were callous pieces of shite that acted only in their own self interest?

Thug piece of shite is what I would call them.

One of the things that I hated most was when a brother would try to deliberately embarrass a pledge in front of girls. Absolutely infuriating.

90% of the time it was some douche that most of the fraternity disliked who was probably angry that the new kids were getting much more attention. It eventually became an absolute rule that you don't frick with pledges who are bringing girls around.

If you're in the car when your friend kills someone in a drive-by shooting, and you don't report it, what do you think happens to you when the cops find out?

Yeah because frats in the South are soo much different. They just wear pink polos, way too short khaki shorts, and have the frat swoop haircut. Otherwise they're exactly the same.

I can't tell you how many times in college my friends were falling over and passing out from being drunk and I never called 911 and they're all fine. They just didn't realize he had a brain injury as well.

But the article said they waited 40 mins before calling for help and that in the video someone could be heard saying something about them getting in trouble. It sounds like they were more worried about getting in trouble than getting someone they felt needed help, help.

The only good news out of this is that a company agreed to pay for the kids casket:

If the student body is mostly guidos, the frats are going to be mostly guidos. At MIT (if they even have fraternities) they're going to be mostly nerds. In the south, they're going to be some variation on baw.

For all the snowflake accusations against millenials, there's also a streak of callousness among a lot of them that borders on sociopathy. I don't know if it's early exposure to tech or what, but they can be amazingly cruel to one another. This is one example. The LSU Sigma Chis who let one of their "brothers" get deep into opiates and eventually OD, apparently without lifting a finger to try to get him into treatment, is another.

Back in the day, we were very capable of doing something stupid or careless that got someone hurt, or worse. But even the worst chapter on campus wouldn't have allowed this sort of depraved indifference to go on.

quote: Here's a detailed account of what happened. It just blows my mind that so many people can fail to act like decent human beings. I understand that people freak out and panic, but over the course of numerous hours? With only one guy being the voice of reason? I just never saw anything approaching that level of callousness when I was in school.

It's pretty astounding that one guy wouldn't be mature enough to know Piazza needed a doctor and tell the other members to frick off.

In the '90s there was a fraternity incident here in LA that could have been fatal, if not for one member with some sense and enough balls to tell the other members to frick off. They were having a bonfire during Hell Week out at an old borrow pit. It was cold, but not freezing. Maybe mid-40s. Everything was drinking and the members were making the pledges "swim" for a set period of time every so often. Then they'd get the pledges out of the water to warm up by the fire and do some shots. Then, back in the water. Rinse, repeat...

After a couple of hours, one pledge in particular is in a bad way. They were all drunk, but this kid was largely incoherent, blue lips, cold extremities, etc. He was severely hypothermic. One member recognizes this and tried to get him warmed up, but the kid doesn't improve. The member tells the other members, "We need to bring him to a hospital." Of course he's met with a resounding chorus of "frick that"s and "no, we'll get in trouble"s. Despite the pressure from his brothers, he loads the kid up in his car and takes him to the nearest hospital.

I don't remember what the pledge's core temperature was, but the consensus in the ER was that he would have died if he hadn't come to the hospital. The member had made up a bullshite cover story, but it didn't hold up long. The fraternity got the boot for a while, but that wasn't nearly as bad as killing a pledge.
