It's pretty astounding that one guy wouldn't be mature enough to know Piazza needed a doctor and tell the other members to frick off.

One of the members insisted twice that they call 911 and he was brow beaten and berated for it.

It sounds like that at a minimum, a dozen guys saw Piazza from the time they found him at the foot of the basement stairs until mid-morning the next day. Probably more.

Somebody could have just dumped him at the ER during the night, if they didn't have the balls to go in with him and explain what happened.

Agreed. So many bad decisions and the one decision that could have possibly saved his life wasn't made.

Insisted twice, huh? He didn't make the phone call, but he "insisted twice". Saying that now to try to save his own arse makes him an even bigger douche.

More proof that frats are nothing more than organizations for losers who can't get friends in real life and have to buy them

Frats do no good for the community, they do nothing but bad. They hide behind their once a semester token philanthropy to justify the other months of the semester criminal and damaging behavior.

Frats are a net negative. Nothing but destruction and crime.

I can say the same thing about the alcohol industry.

I just never saw anything approaching that level of callousness when I was in school.

Dude, that's because your fraternity sucked.

I kept picturing Anthony Soprano as the frat douches as I read that.

Seriously, though that was F'ed up. That text message about finding him behind the bar sounds as if it was written by a parent or some other authority figure. I wonder how many of those kids reached out to parents or chapter advisors???

Yeah because frats in the South are soo much different. They just wear pink polos, way too short khaki shorts, and have the frat swoop haircut. Otherwise they're exactly the same.

Good fraternities at big southern schools are different. Ask people who were in those fraternities or hung out with them. Ask them about visiting other chapters in other parts of the country.

Look, I'm in my early 30s, I don't really give as much of a shite about defending greek life as I once did. But 100% of big fraternities at SEC schools lecture pledges about not mistreating women, about what to do to those who do mistreat women, about not bringing down fraternity GPAs, etc. That "southern man" culture, lame as it may be, does not exist everywhere.

I'm not going to pretend it's always followed here, but it is taught and it often shows.

Yep, he could have just left the house and called 911 to help out. However, the other guys did admit that he said they needed to get him help. They pushed him into a wall for saying so. The one moron leader said the others there were biology and kinesiology majors and they said he didn't need help, so their opinions meant much more than the guy that said he needed help. I wonder how that guy feels right now?

They found this guy bleeding from the head with his arms clenched, his hands in the air (like Rigor Mortis would do) and cold skin. Yet, they still tried to prop him up, dress him (unsuccessfully), etc., before calling 911. It was obvious he needed help the moment they saw him that morning.

Do you even proofread your own bullshite?

So does the once a semester philanthropy does ANY good, or do fraternities do nothing but bad?

See above. Greek philanthropy doesn't stop at graduation. I know many people in my chapter alumni association that give to the university, various community charities and support brothers in times of natural disaster, family illnesses or other financial crises. If I had "bought" my friends - which I didn't - it still would have been a great investment.

Fraternities aren't for everyone. Kind of like some people think jocks are narcissistic bullies and serial rapists. Not that I'm implying you're a jock. I suspect you were a tackling dummy who did get a bid to even the lowliest fraternity on campus.

I am perplexed how the majority of the comments in this thread revolved around a "frat non frat" argument instead of focusing on how some human beings; regardless of their club affliation, ignored a dying man and denied him medical help.

Hmmmm

They should have taken the kid to the hospital right after they found him at the bottom of the steps. By later that night, it was apparent (at least to one kid, who got thrown into a wall) that the guy needed medical attention. The activities the next morning are beyond inexcusable. Some of these kids ought to be put in jail. The parents of the deceased are going to own that fraternity house by the time the civil suit is done.

I understand not wanting to get in trouble. What I don't understand is when you've obviously already got a huge problem on your hands, making it worse by letting a kid die and then making a halfassed attempt at covering it up. Forget the "right vs wrong" morality aspect of the situation. They were stupid, as well as immoral.

Wow, those kids are fricked. I did some dumb shite in college but I wouldn't have let some unconscious kid get treated like that. I remember calling the cops when TheCaterpillar and I lived together off the square because some drunk kid kid passed out across the street from our house during winter. Drunks have to look out for other drunks
