In a handful of areas on Hong Kong Island, you'll find more Brits, Aussies, Kiwis, and Eastern Europeans than Chinese. Peel Street (Soho) is one of those areas.

Partly those two. Also, many of the people employed by the financial industry and the universities come from Western countries because of the low-tax, yet cool urban lifestyle in Hong Kong. The Eastern Europeans like opening businesses in Hong Kong because there has traditionally been very little corruption.

Yeah, I had no idea that Hong Kong kind of acts as an independent nation from the rest of China. Which is what all of the protests were about several months ago.

It’s kind of crazy a lot of those foreigners are still there considering the protests and police resistance shown before the pandemic. I could not imagine being an American who moved to Hong Kong and potentially being subject to that. Would be awful. It’s one thing if it’s your home land and you’re defending it. It’s another to have moved there and see what enticed you to make a change collapse around you. So is that all over now?
