I thought you were still around here.

More like a finished crawl space but for cars.... With a huge sump pump.

will be interesting to see if this council/mayor supports another height variance for this property. I've said before I think this property - and all property along canal - should fall under the zoning for the DDD, not the VCC. I would expect a huge fight from the preservationists to stop any variance or change of zoning. I think a lot of that will turn on what the eventual "fault" of this disaster is.

Any major development is going to require parking, which is going to severely limit the use of the property, if they can't go taller than 70 feet.

The risk of a large building next to old historic buildings will likely be a sticking point for quite some time, no matter how unlikely a repeat is

This means the City is going to declare the building as an immediate danger to collapse to fast track the demolition of the entire building.

They just blew a ton of explosives on top of that building plus dropped 80 tons of pinballs on it and it’s still standing.

That’s demonstrably the strongest building in downtown now.

I thought the same thing today and figured more of the structure would have fallen.

Besides half of it already being collapsed.

It is surprising that the other half had no issues when the cranes fell on it. Especially since everyone has been saying how deficient the design/construction appears to be.

I think a lot of the weight from the canal crane is being supported by the elevator shaft, which is probably anchored you the foundation

Yeah usually those shafts and the staircase shafts are the strongest part of the structure.

No
One crane didnt touch the building and the other is still laying on it supported by shaft beams mounted to foundation.

If they would have dropped the cranes onto the middle of building, it would have folded.

It’s not anchored to the foundation. It’s just structural steel bolted in. It bent pretty well but it has held. I believe now they can get another crane hooked to it and cut it up to remove.

Wondering if that was somewhat of their plan all along. Just get the counterweight off and get the crane to lay down on something.

You think that steel column on that roof is one continuous steel piece to the concrete foundation?

I would say that the developer already has the variance, but I imagine all of that is null and void at this point.

Yes, for this project.

A new project, or a substantial change, would require a new variance.

I missed a few days... so did they determine exactly what caused the collapse? Was it an engineer design flaw, the construction company cutting corners, incompetent workers, just plain chaos theory, or maybe all of the above?

Point is... if they demolished the building so quickly without determining cause... what is to keep them from making the same mistakes again?

No one has anything concrete yet.

Just wild speculation.

The building has not been demolished other than the collapse last Saturday. The unstable top-heavy cranes that could fall on nearby stuff were taken down today. Kinda.
