Why do people see this as a "tax increase"? It is more like a "tax correction"...

If you have an improved property and have not paid for it until now just be happy you avoided it as long as you have. One way to avoid more tax proposals from being submitted/neccessary is for the Assessor to gain an accurate picture of all taxable properties.

ALL government entities are in a cash grab mode on the citizens. Property owners are easy targets because you can't move it.

They want you bankrolling larger operations and their guaranteed retirements funded since the trusts they are in have not been meeting projections and are going bankrupt facing massive unfunded liabilities.

But that was an issue circa 02-03.

I did NOT pull permits. I expect it when that happens.

And I am the only address in my area, at least for this guy, as he showed me his clipboard with his assignments and the next one was way across town. At least one would assume they would assign by area but it is the parish government after all.

I asked for the guys ID and he handed me a laminated card from his wallet that must have been 15 years old and could have been made by a third grader. I said "That's not much of an ID" and he said "Well its not much of a job being a Deputy Assessor."

At least I am laughing until this minimum wage fool raises my taxes.

EBRP. Capital Heights and Odgen Park are the culprits. Most have purchased homes after 2003.

The EBR Attorney's office made it clear to me a couple years ago when I was disputing an expropriation of some of my property that the government owns all of the land and only allows us to use it until they need it.

NOLA article on audit
quote:

LTC's oversight of parish tax assessors does not ensure that residential property tax assessments are accurate," the audit says. It adds, "We found some homeowners who owed significantly more in property taxes than their neighbors, despite the properties having similar fair market values."

Been down this road before. Ended up paying more taxes Compare your neighbors online.

Well....the state doesn't get property tax.

Hell...my neighbors are still paying taxes for "undeveloped land". I pay $2000ish last year. They paid $58.

Yea but that shite gets expensive. I use EagleView for some estimates for banks and it's not cheap. I guess it's cheaper than paying two Parish workers to drive around with a wheel and measure shite tough. Not sure why measuring a house is a two-person job.

Because I believe that owning a primary residence free and clear, which includes not paying property tax on it, should be an option for everyone. Even if you pay your house off, you never really own it. It's messed up if you think about it.

Exactly where I mentioned and alot of it had to do with inheriting houses from parents/grandparents.
That is some fricked up shite. A glaring example was(IS?)
A. Guy buys/builds new house in a new subdivision in BR for $300k and pays fair share of taxes.
B. Guy inherits a house that was build in 1938 on Capital Heights. It's appraised at $28k. He puts $150k into it. 3 months later it's worth $300k. Homestead exemption wipes out any tax burden.

That's some unfair shite that was supposed to be all fixed up. Kinda shocked it's still not.

I'll be sure to raise hell if my neighbors aren't paying the same, when I assume they jack up mine this year based on the sales price.

There were plenty of documented cases on this. Do some Googling. The Advocate and Br Business report websites had several articles about it back then.

One of your neighbors went onto the assessors site and saw that you are paying quite a bit less in taxes than they are.

You should go house to house and interrogate to find out who the snitch is.

This is the real problem, it is essentially laziness on the part of the Assessor. It is easier and less costly to review the mortgage records and to take the value of the new mortgage or sale price and assess the property. If you borrow it may happen as well. It is particularly bad in Ascension. Where the new people essentially are paying taxes for the existing structures who see the benefits and the negatives of increased housing and land value. If everyone was assessed fairly, then the way a millage is designed, they have the option to lower everyone's taxes, but they never do. Property taxes are the worst when you consider non-property owners get to vote on taxing the ones who do own property. Also, Commercial is even worse. If your value was such that the assessment put you high; then your business fails or the State puts up a median or red light or something that kills your business, they will not reassess your property.

Once they inevitably jack my taxes through the ceiling, can I appeal and how does that go?

In my area and I assume its the same for all over the state, you can pay for a certified appraiser to determine the value of your property. The assessor will use that figure, but the problem is most of the time the appraiser's figures are 10-15% higher than the assessor's.
