Parish Assessor's Office showed up at my house today

Woke up to two dudes in blue "Deputy Assessor" windbreakers walking around my house (inside my wall and gate) with a measuring wheel. After the initial "WTF are you doing / who are you" and asking for ID, I was told they didn't have Square Footage for my house on file and are measuring. The house has been in place since 1970 so I find that difficult to believe.
Has anyone dealt with the Parish Assessor before? What would prompt them to come out now? Once they inevitably jack my taxes through the ceiling, can I appeal and how does that go?
Any words of wisdom on this? Should I have set the dogs on them?

Is that the house you added to?

EBR and I never got to start the addition. I expected that to happen when we pulled permits but that didn't start yet.

If you have signs posted at every entrance warning people about the dog, yes.

What I've learned about the government over the past almost 32 years is that they can do whatever the frick they want

You shouldn't see a huge increase if they are just reassessing you. However, if your taxes are based on 1970s value then you fricking deserve a huge tax hike
(that was supposed to be addressed and adjusted in early 2000s when Mid-City residents renovating houses threw a big arse fit b/c long time residents were paying ZERO taxes on houses not being reassessed since the 50s).
Did you call about the new addition or do anything with the office that would have prompted them to come reassess your property? It's kind of weird coincidence if not.

Each year in accordance with the revised statutes, the assessor's office opens its books for public inspection. The books are open for 15 calendar days (as distinguished from 15 business days) for inspection by the public to review current assessments. It is at that time that you may discuss any discrepancies in the assessed value of your property. After public inspection, the Metro Council sits as a board of review to hear any complaints. If the Metro Council agrees with either the Assessor or complainant, either of the parties can appeal their decision to the Louisiana Tax Commission. After the first of August each year, a call to the Assessor's office will reveal the open dates scheduled for that year.

They are reassessing this year in the state. Your taxes are going to go up if they don't have measurements. They are going up even if they had measurements
Posted on 3/1/16 at 10:18 am to jbgleason
most assessors take their measurements from aerial maps.

I am very surprised the EBRP Assessor is actually doing anything. Anything at all.

I have a few friends that purchased homes for under $75k, renovated them, and are probably currently worth over $300k. Paying ZERO property taxes.

Gotcha. Like meaux said, with technology these days they can do this effectively with maps and GIS software.
I worked in this industry in Texas in 99. Each CAD(central appraisal district) actually pays a shite ton of appraisers and your shite got at least a drive-by if not more every 2 yrs. They did that so you couldn't contest the automatic increase in property taxes each year if under certain %. Ducks in a row per se.
IN La and EBR in particular re-assessments are a joke. Well they have been. They should be out there every couple years at least. Or using maps/software to note changes and such. Fair is fair if you add a bedroom, mancave, pool or even a nice fence.

Yep! It's completely unfair.
This is what i mentioned happened in BR in the areas like Mid-City, Garden District, etc. But that was an issue circa 02-03.
This should NOT be the case any more in EBR. What parish are you in?

The first house I bought in Mid-City 5 years ago was simply assessed at the sales price. Our new one still holds the 2007 or so assessment value, I'm waiting for that new assessment this year based on the sales price.

I guess I misinterpreted what he said.
I thought he meant he had pulled the permits, but hadn't started the building process.
It wouldn't be my first mistake today.

any JACKING of taxes can be defended...if you ain't rich!!
and your income is relatively low, depending on your age, you may qualify for a SENIOR FREEZE
but if you got good income and stocks etc...not much u can do
just sit tight and see what they got planned, if anything
