Cutting kids from sports in middle school is the dumbest shite ever. Boys develop tremendously between 7th grade and seniors in high school. Why would anyone be ok with a state employee pulling the trigger on some kid’s future by cutting him? Have enough teams for everyone to play. Grade them out of necessary, but don’t cut anyone. It’s stupid.

Not every school has the resources to do this.

Most schools don't have enough staff to have a 6th, 7th, and 8th grade team. In our area 6th can still play for the YMCA and another local league. The public middle schools have just 7th and 8th. Having 80 members on a team just means you have a lot of little little kids standing around. If you haven't been in a middle school lately there's some absolutely tiny 6th graders, and 8th graders who look grown. It's a completely different looking sport. Like freshman and Varsity football in HS. If the dad's are pissed coach the teams.

You didn’t make it to NFL because you were cut from 6th grade football?

darth you sound like you are in allen. i coached for a long time and spent the last years coaching middle school. we never cut. had 4 coaches for 7 and 8. we carried 150 in each grade. played 3 schedules in each grade. lot of work but it paid off. won 3 rings and 2 semi finalists in 5 yr period. every kid played both sides every game.

I just started my first year as the varsity head basketball coach at my school. The entitlement is insane nowadays. Been plenty of whining and bitching from kids that were on the team last year but didn’t make it this year.

Meanwhile the squad I selected is begging to practice MORE. They want to practice every day, even on the weekend. Two hours after every school day and they get mad we aren’t going longer. The kids that got cut aren’t hungry like that. No regrets on any of my choices.

Team sports are for pussies who have to hide behind their teammates. Kids with true strength of character win on their own and lose on their own in individual sports.

Not me. Perfect example of this was my buddy's kid. In 9th grade, he might have been 5'9" and 110 lbs. Baseball coach cut him. Well, he quit playing baseball and played football where they have multiple teams and don't cut anyone. Senior year, the kid is over 6', strong, and runs like a deer.

I can think of plenty examples like the one above. I'm all for grading teams out (varsity vs JV), but it makes no sense at all to end a kid's career at 13 years old. You have no idea what they might grow into.

Sounds like he was a soft quitter.
I know a guy who was cut from his high school varsity basketball team. Luckily he wasn’t a quitter

so where are they getting the coaches to coach these lower level teams?

i agree with your premise but also i live in the real world where resources are limited, they can only keep so many kids and coach effectively. especially at the middle school level and in sports like baseball

i 100% agree though with your premise, i dont think you should really cut anyone in HS, puberty and the weight room can be a mother fricker and change someone in a years time that may be able to contribute to your team one day, but have to have the resouces to handle all those kids effectively.

Well this is a very simplistic view. Every team sport is made up of individual battles in their games. You get individual competition as well as learning how to work with a team. Kids with true strength of character can win their own battles and sometimes even have the opportunity to help pick up a teammate; kids competing alone must not have enough character for to help others

When we were kids back in the 60's, there were playground teams where everyone played, every sport if they wanted. There were school teams you could try out for, but only the best athletes played there. Once we hit HS you had to make the team.

I was good enough to ride the bench in basketball, but I only made the team because I was tall, I hated it.

The idea of team sports is great, but a lot of parents don't see the other important lessons to be learned. Dealing with failure means try harder, bad call by an umpire, learn that life is not always fair, there are bad bosses, bad judges, dumb cops, deal with it.

And those individual sport kids have a lot of time to build on that character when a team sport kid stuffs him in a locker.

I have two five-year-old twin girls that are both in gymnastics. They always talk about wanting trophies and medals and I am exceedingly, brutally clear with them that there are losers in life. If they want a trophy, they need to pay close attention to their coach, practice often at home, and exercise to get stronger. If they do all that then they will have a good chance to win. If they don't, then I've made it clear they are never going to win shite in life.

My wife gets irate when I talk to them like that, but it is what it is. I may be raising two princesses, but I certainly am not raising two pussies.

It's not really relevant to 5th and 6th graders, but for top tier HS football it makes sense to me. My son played for an elite program that won multiple state championships in the last 4 years and the coaches had a long meeting with all the parents preseason and made it crystal clear that the ONLY way your son would be on the field is if he is the best at his position. None of the parents ever complained to the coaches (that I know of), but I did here some grumblings once in a while from disgruntled parents.

Our high schools, everybody made the "team".

Not everybody played though. Kind of the way it should be IMO unless you're at one of the 4/5A schools.

To me, there is no harm it letting a bunch of middle schoolers make the team, practice and sit the bench.

High School seems like a different beast though at higher levels of competition. Tryouts seem acceptable. You're either good enough or you're not at that point.

Maybe he’s talking about AJ or Trist. He mentions Chalmette High a lot…

And I can confirm that pre Katrina Chalmette Middle made cuts on their football team lol
