I’m sure they’re asking for raises and promotions while doing nothing working from home. Seems like the norm.

Crazy that people at 22-24 think they just get their dream house and dream job the second they walk off campus.

Life doesn't work that way.

'09 Grad here. I would advise her to expand her search to anything engineering adjacent. Estimating, field engineers at a construction firm, Drafting. Could help her out a bit. Is she willing to relocate or work out on-site?

Someone in this thread had a daughter walk straight into a 6-figure entry level finance job after graduating from a state school.

Seems like it happens fairly easy.

Son graduated CM in December from LSU. Applied & interviewed w several. Took a job w a major EPC on a project making good money. Had to temp relo to the project but he is young, single, working his arse off, learning a ton (painfully), paying his dues and putting the $ away. Most importantly, he is off my payroll.

She, lives in a mid tier city. I was surprised too but she’s sending apps and have good grades but it’s just competitive

I've interviewed a couple recent grads. There is an entitlement there, and a refusal to put in more than 40 without having any real world experience that i don't get if you're looking for someone to hire you. Maybe she needs to lower her expectation to meet reality and as other said, expand her search nationally.

Civil market is about to start booming again.

I know several women, less than 2 years out of college making 6-figures in finance related roles.

AI is going to crush computer science majors

My son is in grad school in a competitive program and will graduate this spring. He had a hard time getting a good internship last summer (while he was still in grad school). He found out many graduates were taking internships because they couldn't find full-time jobs. My son had been contemplating law school, so he took the LSAT and prepared his application. He was just admitted to Harvard Law School. Funny how things work out.

In the immediate sort of, but outsourcing is a bigger immediate threat to compsci jobs than AI. If AI was a serious threat then it would be threatening way more than just computer science folks.

Any white collar person that has a repetitive computational job is at risk of losing their jobs to AI.

At the moment, almost none of the job market woes seem related to AI. Majority of it is just bad economic patterns and outsourcing.

What is he trying to focus on? There are about a dozen different fields this degree opens up. Sounds like he's trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

I do believe AI and advanced automation will ruin quite a few careers in the future. But I agree, the early stages are right now. The “learn to code” ship has sailed, though.

shite, don't tell me that. My son has about a year and a half left to graduate in the same field.

Not even that, just look at economic numbers....there's zero impact from AI right now. It still has a ways to go to not only be shaped for use in various industries, but there's still going to be a trust factor included and issues with data sharing.

I work a job that could certainly benefit a lot of from AI yet it's not even a thought. Still using the same programs people have been using for decades at this point...I don't believe the business community is just this ignorant. I believe they're simply still not moved enough by what it can do to go all in.

What about the big four consulting racket has changed with AI? Nothing.

LSU?

If so he can intern (paid) with us this summer if he's interested in structural. I'll teach him how to use design and analysis software.

20-somethings today would rather die than live in a 1700 sq ft ranch with linoleum and carpet floors.
