Sounds like their kids would be better off in a trade school. Low cost, shorter curriculum, most trade schools have very active placement programs so the grad comes out with a decent job.

I think this happens but is pretty rare.
For example I’ve interviewed hundreds of soon to be college grads and not once did I have to deal with a parent.
I think the overbearing parent thing is talked about a lot more than it is seen.

There's some of that, but we also have a ton of dirt poor "first gen" college students. Their parents aren't educated (might not even speak English) and don't make any money for themselves anyway.
The high school counselors push them all to go to college without any real consideration for how the student will pay for it.

Exactly how I live my life. My parents paid for all of us to have a four year degree. Beyond that was on us.
I have gotten all of my children through undergrad college debt free. Same deal.
The only difference is that I went to LSU when tuition was less than $1,000. All but one of my kids went to selective private colleges out of state.
But that was my promise to myself. I was going to make that happen even if I had to eat cat food.

I actually just joined a Facebook group for one of the schools that One of my younger kids is attending.
It is crazy, your comment about cost is spot on. one bedroom in an apartment that has four bedrooms is over $12,000 per year, so 48K per year for a four bedroom apartment, I really need to look into who owns the student housing apartments, and invest heavily in them

I'm glad my only problem with mine going off to college is trying to rent a cargo van to haul stuff to her dorm. She's got a full scholarship, and I tried to rent a van from Hertz a few days ago. I got a call last night, after they were closed, and they left a message that the online booking system "allowed" me to rent a van from an office that doesn't rent vans. So I went online to Enterprise, and rented a van. Get a call this morning that there is more demand than supply and they may not have a cargo van available for me. I have an enclosed trailer I can use as a backup, but it seems in 2026 than online reservation systems would be more advanced than this. Customer is trying to rent a van from location XYZ and they don't rent those, maybe redirect me to another location before finalizing. Customer wants to rent this vehicle from us, do we have enough available before we finalize?

Very true. We see this in several facet of life's finances. The uneducated don't know any better and those who stand to make money off of that could not care less what it does to them.
I absolutely hate the idea of saving people from themselves, but this out-of-control freight train of student loans needs to be stopped. If student loans were given the same scrutiny and underwriting that mortgages and business loans are, we'd be in a lot better shape. Only issue is the universities will never want that since it will significantly curtail their revenue.

That's cheap when you compare it to top tier schools.
it is cheap but it's also a huge issue.
Parents sending their kids to school this year would have given birth during the housing crisis or near there, which resulted in a recession from 07-09. I entered the workforce then and times werent great for a younger worker trying to find their way.
Then we dealt with the Obama years with financial programs intended to revive the economy, then COVID followed by the two highest inflation years since 40 years prior... all while wages havent adjusted.
In state estimated costs at Auburn this year at almost 40K all in. that is 4x the estimate of when I went to school in 2002.
There are many valid points in this thread. College isnt for everyone. Parents should try to help their kids with college and save. Kids can help pay for their own, etc.
I think it is also fair to say that parents now also have a more difficult task of paying for the current college costs based on economic factors of the past 20 years, and it frankly isnt always because they have shiny new cars and mortgages that they cannot afford.
College needs a correction, badly, or something in the environment will need to change because the costs are only rising and in the coming years it will create a larger and larger burden on anyone that wants to participate.

We lucked out. Months before we went, our great uncle was placed in a nursing home, that left a three bedroom two bath house, last painted exterior in 1942. Grandfather decided “We get the house, the three of you are going to update the kitchen and two baths. Then paint the house. All done before the end of the summer. Six years of school without a rent or searching for housing. All added Master’s.
The only challenge was getting Sears to come up with a primer and paint to end the thirst that wood house had for moisture. That house has been passed down for generations now. We learned cook and grocery shop each week and ate better than the students on a meal plan. Two blocks off campus was a gift as well.

I used Budget when I went on a trip out west earlier this summer. 12 passenger van rental, made the reservation a month out for a week. We arrive at the airport after 9PM and they don't have a van. They gave us a minivan for the night, and got us the 12 passenger van there the next day, but even that was a hassle loading and unloading luggage and supplies. Now Hertz and Enterprise have done the same thing, but at least I got a call ahead of time from both of them to let me know.

people like to talk down on california, myself included, but my daughter will likely be attending a local community college 2 miles from my house, and her associates degree will guarantee admission to any california state university and will also include a gpa boost. oh, and it's completely tuition free. granted, it's all military connected, still a huge chunk of money that i don't have to spend. and we're close enough to all of the schools that she can stay living at home and focus on school
