people's criticism of how others spend their own money is OOC. Let also talk about expensive college degrees that never produce jack shite or weddings that end in divorce, while we're at it.

ets also detail the families that send 10k or more on spending 6 days in disney world. or above middle class families that put their 16 yr old in a 55k+ vehicle to drive to school. Or mommas that buy chick fil a and starbees for their kids 5 days a week. lets go down this slope boys.

It’s a shame Rec has come to what it is … AA “travel” ball is basically rec
But tbh …99% of these teams don’t travel… they play 15/20 miles at most from their house.
All this travel ball hate and making fun of is hilarious to me…. Usually parents who don’t have kids playing who have no idea, or kids aren’t good enough to play on serious teams.
There are plenty of teams who just get a bunch of friends together , play local, have cool uniforms, and play at nice complexes…. Which compared to t shirts and shitty fields that rec provides, is cool as hell to these kids.
I’d say about 10% actually have to travel , and that is just bc (at least when I coached) there were 1, maybe 2 tournaments that had major level division.
And about 1% is the “my son is a D1 player” types….. it is really out of the norm

Makes sense, thanks for explaining. I just see comments on expenses and making fun of so it seemed crazy.

Add "Braison" to the Travel Ball name list. That's a new one for me
I know a guy who's son has that name but it's spelled with a Y (Brayson) I think and coincidentally he is a travel ball kid who just recently got a baseball scholarship to a small college so maybe its worth it to spend some money on the kid's development.

Was it really necessary to move to travel ball? I understand it allows for playing unknown teams and stretching the teams. But didn’t college and professional players once come from schools and park rec? And the latter allowed for community and friendships locally.
The thing is not all travel teams are costing $10K+. My sons travel team cost around $1,500 for the year. Rec in our area is close to $250 per season. So yeah its a little more. But between some fundraising and sponsors we dont have to spend a ton out of pocket.
While rec numbers are strong in our area (almost 900 kids this spring in our local rec league from 3-18) the talent is just so rough cause majority of kids with any talent moved to travel.
My son (10) played Rec in the fall just cause he wanted to play with some school friends and dominate. He batted .900 on the season. Struck out One time in a 15 game season.
With his travel team he bats around .380 or so. A much more realistic number. So he almost has to play travel at this point to play decent competition and for it to be any sort of challenge. Cause batting .900 may be fun for him but its not making him a better player.

My kid is in travel, we spend maybe 2k a year. A year, not season.

Rec up to 8 is awesome for players and fans.
For more talented players all the fun comes out at 9 when most move to open baseball.
It becomes painfui to play and watch at the rec level because of pitching, fielding and batting disparities and lacking,

Is anyone getting rich off of these travel sports?

Coopoerstown Dreams Park has 104 teams for 15 tournaments this Summer. You have pay for a minimum of 11 players and 2 coaches at $1295 a player. Most teams have more. There is a $1295 umpire fee and $800 facilities fee for each team.
They will gross a minimum of 30 million dollars this Summer not even considering sponsors, merch, photo packages, game rooms and snack bar..

$1,500 isn’t unreasonable. Compared to dance and cheer, and any other activities, seems in the ballpark. We also did fundraising by working concessions for cheerleading. It probably wasn’t far off the mark even years ago.

Travel ball families are an embarrassment. Your kid will not be making an MLB team, much less a D-1 team.
Complete waste of time and money.

Yea- you could get crazy with it, and some people do. But that’s the far outlier..
But if you buy 3 $500 bays a year, go to lessons 2x a week at $60-80 a pop, etc.. it can add up
I always bought a bat off clearance for the the cages , and let him use someone else’s “next greatest thing” in the game…lol … there were always 8-10 of
Those in the dugout
