I worked there several years ago. The mill has had a string of "Brilliant" Managers, that have slowly run moral and the business into a downward trend. Sorry to see this happen.

Now I know why I haven't been able to get consistent appointments in there for a while. I was only contacted to come put out a fire. I hate that fricking mill.

At one time not very long ago, this was the flagship mill of the GP fleet and the 2 fine paper machines were some of the most efficient (low cost producers) producing this grade in the industry prior to his arrival. It is surprising to me however that the mill could not be repurposed to make an unbleached board grade, although it would require a significant investment/rebuild of existing assets or new machine
I just shared a plane ride from BTR to ATL with an ME who works for a company that converts fine paper machines to cardboard in paper mills. It's January and they can't accept any new contracts for the year because they are booked. Can't take all his vacation time.... Cardboard/shipping is in demand because of amazon/delivery, but the ability to shift the plants is lagged due to different constraints aka trained personnel.

This is BAD.........................

This is why I would never go into pulp and paper...

I probably know you, I left in 98. I had been working on the rewinders and sheeters in the converting area. Tim Crawford was mill manager and Stan Shaw was HR director. It's been awhile but I was Chief Shop Steward for a few years.

GP has one of the worst company cultures I have ever experienced.
Short term it will hurt. Long term most of the employees will be better off.
Amen, I speak from personal experience...

I'm sorry to hear.
What did you do (generally, no need to blow your cover) there? Can you take your skills into another place?
Did they give y'all any severance or help?
Edit: I see you already answered those questions. Best of luck to you and hopefully you stay on (or can find a nice soft landing spot)

will close the communications paper division of its Port Hudson facility, as well as the wood yard, pulp mill and energy complex that support it.
I hate to say it, but that’s not a partial shutdown

And I heard Mr. "Brilliant" is going into "early" retirement as a result of the announcement. Makes me sick to my stomach

It was announced to us this morning that this manager conveniently retired, effective, immediately.

They wouldn't be the first mill to do what they did and just keep trucking in wet lap to keep making butt wipe.
Here's to hoping some people keep their jobs.
