I travel a good bit for my job so I usually keep a dedicated "work vehicle" that looks presentable but is also cheap to own, maintain, and is as reliable as possible. I want to keep costs as low as possible so I can actually make money on my work travel and I don't want something "too nice" as I tend to use it as "winter beater" when the roads are salty. It also gets exposed to hail storms from time to time as I already have two vehicles in my garage.
In the past, I have usually bought 10+ year old Toyota Camrys and just paid cash. I am looking to replace my current Camry, but am also considering maybe an SUV.
Obviously Toyotas are still very expensive used but someone mentioned the other day that a Subaru may be a good option for me. I have zero experience with Subarus as far as common problems, models to avoid, cost of repairs, reliability, etc.
I would be open to any sedan or SUV so if anyone has any recommendations that would be great. In my winter driving, I don't necessarily drive in snow a ton as I WFH during those events, so AWD isn't necessary.

The Outback seems right up your alley.

What's most important to you? Price? Safety? Comfort? Warranty?

Dial back the quotation marks.
Less is always better here.

In that order?
Have you thought about a sportage? I've got several friends and relatives with those and they love them. Great gas mileage, super roomy, comfortable ride. If I didn't need a third row I'd probably have gotten one of those.

I have a 2019 Subaru Outback. Its a great vehicle for Colorado winters and alot of space for fun in the summer.

I was a Toyota only guy, I drove a Sienna, wife has a Highlander. I test drove an Outback in 2015, my wife loves it, oil and tires, very low maintenance, on wet highways it's amazing.
I have a 2018 Forester, importantly, I believe that reliability is the greatest luxury a car can give you, incredibly reliable. The bad new is that if you want a used one, good luck. Carmax offered me $20k, so they are not cheap used, but they last forever.
I only try to impress myself, I don't care if a car is flashy, I don't know a car better than a Subaru.

I bought my granddaughter a 2023 Sportage last year. I really like it. It has a lot of useful features even at near base configuration. The AWD works as good as the Subaru I used to have.
We had 210" of snowfall this year, 5-6 feet came in one 4 day storm. Sportage never got close to getting stuck, or making it up hills. I put some Michelin Crossclimate II's on it, and theyre better than studded snow tires.

On a Subaru, I would recommend checking the oil regularly. Keep it at the full line. It does require a little more attention than a camry. Imo. Also keep in mind all 4 tires "should" be pretty close in wear. So replacing 1 tire may be a 4 tire replacement. Tech may be a little behind but if you have toyotas you will be used to it.

I like watching lesbians online and have owned an Ascent for 6 years. Very nice unassuming car. Gas mileage is ok. Upkeep is minimal. Third row is a joke and you'd be better off keeping the seats down and using it as extra storage.

My relatives own a Subaru Dealership, I stopped by the other day, they were offloading around 3, 18 wheeler load of new cars.
They have a great look to some models. Consumer Reports gives almost every car they make high marks, reliability, owner satisfaction and resale value. Looking at sticker prices, you get a little more for your dollar.
I know a number of friends that have them, all seem to be more than satisfied with their vehicle's,

I inherited my MIL's 2015 Accord. Had 30k miles on it. I love it!
