Overlooked (intentionally) aspect of positive Covid tests

I was visiting with a pulmonologist colleague of mine this morning, and he was talking how every time a patient tests positive that result is submitted as a new positive case.
This includes people who are being tested multiple times.
For example, some nursing homes require 2 negative tests before they will accept back a patient.
Some of these people are being tested 4 or 5 times waiting for a negative result.
All of those positives get added to the running total.

That’s not as bad as refusing to distinguish between died with COVID-19 and died of COVID-19.

Absolutely that's what is going on. And you also have people who had a positive test from a couple of months ago, and need a negative test to be cleared to go back to work. They keep getting positive tests for some reason. And to your point, every single time they get a test, it's counted towards total cases.

Wouldn’t that lower the death rate? 4 positive tests but only one death....assuming the patient passed away

I'm agreeing with you, just adding context. It's just a regular occurrence so I always take the daily numbers with a grain of salt knowing they'll likely change down the road. It's not as bad as Florida at least.

What about those who don't test and get added because they are still positive even though they walked out of the testing center because the wait was too long?
