Every full service move I have seen or heard about were nightmares. DIY if you don’t have tons of stuff

I viewed the movers and transporters as subcontractors and basically served as the general contractor to make sure I maintained control of the situation.

I’d estimate I saved ~$10k and nothing of significance was damaged, but I also ended up spending a lot of time on it so if work isn’t flexible it might be worth the money to avoid the stress.

To be fair I also sold or donated what I didn’t love/need before I left to reduce the move requirements.

Prices are WAY higher than that now with labor and gas as they are.

On that note, got any recommendations for Boise?

Oh, and been here all week while the wife starts her job. I freaking love this place. Ate at Kibroms yesterday for dinner then hit the whitewater park and green belt. Even at 100 it felt great with no humidity. Dreading flying back to Columbia tonight.

Just a tip, make sure you use highly durable boxes. We just used the cheap Home Depot ones and they were falling apart by the time we got our stuff.

Relocation covered up to $6k with receipts, so why not? I did not get the difference if I didn't spend the entire $6k. I also got an additional $4k signing bonus. Outside of packing clothes, dishes, and fragile items, I didn't lift a finger.

Who did you use Sherman?

Puma movers out of Dallas. They came on time. Loaded up in about 4.5 hours, delivered the next morning in Broussard. Nothing broken or damaged. They also didn't damage our new home at all.

Solid job!

I see 2 guys and a truck a lot around here. Also 208 movers. I've never used anyone, so your guess is as good as mine on that.

Haha, that's great, you were like 3 blocks away from my house. I've been curious about Kibrom's but we've never gone.

It was fricking hot yesterday, man. Brutal. Yesterday I rode down to Lucky Peak around midday and came back lateish. I wonder if maybe I rode right by you. I usually hop on the greenbelt near Whitewater.

When are yall making the final move?

EDIT -- Also I'm sure you will find out for yourself, two places we like are Lock Stock and Barrell on Jefferson/11th and Anthony's on Front. Kinda pricey, and I think Anthony's is a regional chain, but both really good.

Don't be a pussy. Just get a U-Haul and a tow your car.

Probably taxed on the reimbursement payment, though, huh?

Relo was never taxed and bonus was $4k after taxes. Apparently, Huntsville wasn't a desirable place to live last year.

I've used this company LINK to move both local & long distance over the past couple years & never had any problems with them. There were also cheaper than the other companies I contacted, which is why I chose them in the first place. They have a student discount too, only $50 off I think but it's something.

Be prepared for them to hold your shite hostage when they jack up the prices once they have your stuff on a truck.

OTOH, you can do what some family friends of mine did and U-Haul it. The husband posted a picture of the freaking convoy of UHauls they took to do it and asked the wife on FB if they had condensed their stuff like she claimed.

Abba movers out of BR/Nola are now known as those MFers at our house. I would not let them move a doghouse. Or pack dog bowls.

The quote to move us from Chicago to Baton Rouge was around $20k with United, Atlas, and Mayflower.

United used to use Armstrong in Louisiana and they were pretty good.

I know United can do a virtual quote, other carriers probably do, too. Whatever you do, be careful with the movers that quote you significantly less than the van lines. They usually want a down payment. They’ll quote you one price and then drastically change it after they have your stuff. You have the option to pay it or let them hijack it and accrue storage in addition to the cost. We wound up going with U-Haul.

I just moved in March and used 2 men and a truck. They were awful and I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone. If I had to do it again I would have hired a company to just move my big stuff and boxed everything else up and loaded in a uhaul.
