Ots opinion on charter schools and the educational system

Living in texas, i notice small charter schools popping up everywhere, then I see a video on YouTube of leftist saying public schools are going save the country, YouTube majority report , i like trumps position of school choice, i think parents should have a choice in how their child is educated, but i would be ok trade school being free for 14-18 year olds and giving businesses certain tax credits to hire the kids so they can get on the job training and let those kids skip high school(high school degree is worthless now unless you're going to university), and certain college courses being free if the person works in the country for a certain amount of years(Doctors, engineers, computer science) i like the idea of breaking certain people's hold on the educational system, but i think we should try to help the kids become self sustainable

Charter schools are run by soon-to-be wealthy black people opening up glorified daycares for poor black teenage kids and calling them charter schools
And our city just fricking shovels money into their pockets

Well that is a take.. high school should continued to be required for all kids. At that point in their lives it seems a bit premature to start forcing them into one profession. Well rounded education is valuable.

Love how they give them names with words like Academy or College Prep to make it sound better than it really is

Like many things in society, it's not a question of whether charter schools are "bad" or "good."
Corporate, for-profit charter schools are full of graft and corruption. However, many charter schools (often religious ones in smaller towns) legitimately try to offer a better - or at least different - educational experience from the public system. One issue in trying to determine the effectiveness of charter schools is that many of the highest performing ones selectively decide who they admit, whereas the public system obviously has a mandate to teach everyone.
It's an issue that honestly requires oversight of the rotten actors. However, the corporate charter schools have a lot of influence in Washington, DC, similar to the bullshite for-profit colleges and universities that made a lot of administrators obscenely wealthy by abusing military veterans and stealing money from the federal financial aid system.

What you are describing is already the case.
Students can enter adult ed on an age waiver at 15 and learn trades like welding, autocad, electrical, carpentry and automotive tech as students for free until they earn their high school equivalency.
Students can also remain in high school and earn college credits for free through dual credit or advanced placement. With commitment to it, 30+ hours is very attainable.

Ive only meet one person who sent their kids there, so i really don't know how they operate, but i have seen them everywhere in texas, i agree with school vouchers and school choice, but i think we should have some for trade schools too

Didn't know this, this is awesome but I would be ok with them dropping the high school part and focusing on the trade full time

This is what we need more of not less. Also, kicking out the students causing consistent problems. It sucks that their parents are shite, but so we're mine and I turned out okay.

This pretty much. The problem that most of these school choice bills in states have mostly led to the for profit type of charter being created. Here in AZ the politicians who passed and pushed for the school choice bills owned quite a few of the charter schools.
And for the most part the charter schools pay the teachers like crap and as such have largely unqualified staff as a result.
As you said, oversight is seriously needed, but when status quo benefits people in charge of oversight little will be done.
Kids in public schools ultimately get the shaft for the most part more than anything. Obviously all states are different(I know LA has pretty good per pupil funding), but out here in AZ the per pupil funding is very low to begin with compared to the rest of the country, so it makes a bad situation worse.

All I know is that I taught in public school now teach at a charter school and the difference is night and day. We don’t have a school board nitpicking every little thing we do. Teachers love it more, kids love it more, facilities are nicer, education is better, discipline is better, etc

Im going to be honest I really don't know the difference between a charter and a private school, and im all for giving parents as many options as possible, but i could see how certain corporations will take advantage of that to try and make it all about the money instead of the kids

By 2019, New Orleans had become the first all-charter school system, with not a single direct-run school.
Currently, New Orleans schools are operated by charter management organizations that may run one school or a network of them.
The Louisiana Department of Education says since 2005… under the charter model… the graduation rate has risen by 18 percent… ACT scores have increased… and state test scores have, too.
It not perfect by New Orleans school system is in a much better place.

The school board thing can make or break a public school system for sure, and lack of discipline/schools bowing to parents is definitely one of the biggest issues with public schools.
My fiancee was working at a charter out here and it was a complete crap show, the opposite of what you were describing. And she almost doubled her pay coming to work at my public high school this year.
Just curious, how does the pay at your school compare to your old school? And do they pay into the state retirement? Out here it's basically a 20-30k pay cut and losing the state retirement.

Texas has many of the best public school systems in the nation and many of the worst. Charter schools are for parents who want a certain type of school but don’t want to make any sacrifice. I support giving a kid maybe 50% of what the public education would cost for them to attend a private school but they better not be trying to come into other public school systems that our communities have worked so hard to make excellent.

I think the govt should get out of the public education business.
Charter schools are just public schools that get to avoid many of the burdens public schools face. Religious schools (parochial) should be free to do whatever they want but shouldn’t get public funds.

quote:Well but see, here's the thing: IF those charter schools are shitty, grifting, do-nothing places, then the market will react. We're getting some free market forces in the educational system, which is badly needed.

Because I'll tell you one thing: I don't know what the answer is, but something different has to be done, because as it stands, the status quo of public schools operating like they have ain't it, chief. So many of them, more often than not, are a manifestation of the word, "failure."
Plus, school choice doesn't mean, "send to charter school" in every state where it's allowed. It can (and quite often does) mean, "the public school the next county over that's performing far better." Proactive parents are going to be proactive, so give them the choice.

Only reason to go private school in Nice Texas suburbs is if you want a heavily Christian focused curriculum.
Many Texas burbs have A+ Public schools.
