I remember when it happened. It was past the Rigolets. The location is on Google Maps. There is a roadside memorial. She was one of my first fantasies at ten years old.

Happened near the Rigolets, right?

I think the name of the community is White Kitchen. South of Slidell on Hwy 90.

I thought it happened west of the Rigolets bridge in Orleans.

Better than claiming he fricked her after it happened.

Reason there are dropped bumpers below semi trailers and bobtail trucks now.

They are called Mansfield Bumbers,
Mansfield bar or Mansfield bumper, the guards at the rear of trailers, is also known as ICC bar (named for the Interstate Commerce Commission) intended to prevent a phenomenon known as “underriding” – which is when the car collides with the trailer and goes under it.

You’re right. I had always heard White Kitchen, and there was a marker there, but I searched again and found this:

quote:

John Stringer Case, a native of Slidell, Louisiana, has written us to correct errors in our reporting of the 1967 death of Jayne Mansfield (Slidell is where she died). "I have a copy of the police report," John writes, "and have viewed hundreds of pages of civil court documents." John's most shocking fact is that Jayne did not die at the spot marked by her roadside RIP monument. "It is in error by several miles," John writes. The misplacement of the monument may be because the crash was rumored to have happened at a spot in the highway known as Dead Man's Curve, which is near where the monument stands. But according to John, the police report marks the spot at 2.1 miles west of the Fort Pike Rigolets bridge, or six miles from the White Kitchen parking lot (both of which still exist). "I know the spot within 500 feet," writes John, and it's nowhere near the current monument. "This is also the parish line separating St. Tammany and Orleans Parish," John adds. "Technically she got killed in New Orleans, but it was closer to Slidell."

I remember seeing a couple videos a while back where somebody was trying to pinpoint the exact spot based off the police reports, original newspaper articles and photos of the scene.

Here's a recent one on youtube. If you pause on the map briefly shown at 2:36 - That is the crash location in blue. I've seen that spot determined on other vids as well.

ETA:

Historical footage in the vid above clipped from here (youtube).
