To be fair, the Battle of Midway is probably the single most backbreaking defeat that any modern day country suffered in war. Not in personnel or territory, but just sheer changing of the tides. The Japanese Navy was no joke and put up a formidable fight for quite some time, but was absolutely crushed in the span of 72 hours at Midway.

This site does a good statistical summary of the Pacific theater of WWII.
Short summary, had Midway succeeded for the Japanese it would only have delayed the inevitable, by about 9 months, due to our manufacturing advantages.

Believe the pilot credited with the kill later said as he swung his P-38 around to line up for kill he pulled the trigger to fire off a few test rounds. To his surprise those "test rounds" were right on target. Shot ole Yamamoto down on those first rounds. He couldn't have pulled off better shots if he tried.

Great planes. The Bf-109 G-4/G-6 was also a great fighter for the Luftwaffe. Even earlier 109's ate P-38's alive over the Mediterranean. The Lightning was a hell of a ground attack aircraft, however. Many were moved to the Pacific Theater for this role.

He did say more or less that the politicians and the army establishment didn’t understand what they were getting into (in his “we will have to march to the streets of Washington DC” speech) concerning a war with the U.S. The Japanese Navy in general was less aggressively expansionist philosophically than was the Army..
He had lived in the U.S. for three years and attended Harvard and also served as the attaché in DC. He was fluent in English and understood the U.S. much better than virtually everyone else in the higher echelons of the Japanese political and military establishment.
He also opposed the invasion of Manchuria and vocally opposed an alliance with Germany. He conducted himself with dignity throughout his entire career. He’s probably as close to a good guy that the Axis Powers produced in the higher levels of their hierarchy. Would’ve been interesting to see how he would have turned out if he’d lived.
