At Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia, effectively ending the American Civil War. Saddest day in the south’s history, boys and girls.

Initially, Lee did not intend to surrender, but planned to regroup at the village of Appomattox Court House, where supplies were to be waiting, and then continue the war. Grant chased Lee and got in front of him, so that when Lee's army reached Appomattox Court House, they were surrounded. After an initial battle, Lee decided that the fight was now hopeless, and surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia on April 9, 1865, at the McLean House.[185] In an untraditional gesture and as a sign of Grant's respect and anticipation of peacefully restoring Confederate states to the Union, Lee was permitted to keep his sword and his horse, Traveller.

It was a fake sword. The real sword is still out there, biding its time and plotting its revenge.

I'm not sure what there was to continue. The South was in ruins by this point and most of it had been pacified.

I'd say that the saddest day in the South's history is the day that South Carolina chose to seceded, and the others followed. That was what kicked off a war that could not be won and would leave a wound that still hasn't completely healed today.

The story of Wilmer McLean is always fun to bring up in these discussions.
His house was involved in the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. Beauregard used McLean's house as his HQ.
After the battle, McLean moved away to get away from the war. He moved to Appomattox. In 1865, his house would be used as the site of the surrender meeting between Lee and Grant.

If both sides had equivalent resources and population, the South would have won it in under 2 years.

When the SJWs find out how Grant acted towards Lee, they may want to change the name of Grant Park in Chicago! And tear down Grant's tomb in Manhattan.

Because the southern leadership was immensely better than the union’s, especially at the outset.

Maybe they should have thought twice before trying to start a gunfight with a knife.

I think this line of thought gets too much play.
The South had some really, really, really shitty leaders.

And then came Grant. The "C" student destroyed both the South's "A" students in the real world.
